Holyhead, UK

I will be arriving by Princess Cruise Ship on July 30th to Holyhead. Since I would like to save money and not sign up on the excursions offered for the area I decided to do my own thing. What would someone suggest of things to see while I am there for the day. Is the train station close by to use to travel? What is the number one must see when I get there?

Conwy Castle is a short train ride from Holyhead.

Conwy is easy to get to. I think Caernarfon is more appealing. It would involve a train and bus link, and the schedules might not work for you.

Whatever you do, get out of Holyhead. It is the most dismal place in North Wales.

Yes, you will certainly want to get out of Holyhead as quickly as possible. The train station is next to the ferry terminal.

I personally prefer Conwy over Caernarfon as far as the towns are concerned. Caernarfon Castle is certainly worth a visit but has no main-line train station. You can get to Conwy by taking the train from Holyhead to Llandudno Junction which is less than a mile from Conwy.

There are several other places to visit in Conwy. Aberconwy House, the oldest house in Conwy, dates from 1300. Also not to be missed is Plas Mawr. It is reputed to be one of the best preserved Elizabethan houses in Britain.

We really enjoyed our afternoon at Conwy Castle. Conwy is a nice town and it's easy to walk around.

Trains run about every hour from Holyhead to Conwy - you don't need to go to Llandudno Junction. See www.nationalrail.co.uk.
Holyhead is a port because it's the nearest to Dublin and was where passengers and mail were transferred between trains and ships.
