Has anyone been to the Holocaust Memorial Center on Pava u. 39. It opened in 2004, I think, but the permanent exhibition only opened in the past year.

Lucy...have not been in Budapest since '93 so have not seen the new center (2004, I believe). The Museum at the Dohany Street synagogue is excellent, and of course, the memorial in the courtyard (a steel-leafed weeping willow) is as dramatic a memorial as you will see...funded by The Emanuel Schwartz Fund (Actor Tony Curtis, in memory of his dad!)

Stu T., you are absolutely right. The Wallenberg weeping willow memorial at the Dohany Synogogue is stunning. I like that it is also shaped like a menorah turned upside down. The memorial speaks volumes and represents so much.

I can't seem to find anyone who has been to the new Holocaust Memorial Center. I think I want to go there while in Budapest in July, but want to know how to plan for time.

Thank you so much! I'm also really interested to hear about the new permanent exhibit there. From what I understand, the center was built and opened a year before the permanent exhibit was installed. Seems there was a bit of mild controversy surrounding that. Have a wonderful trip to Budapest!

I haven't been to Budapest yet but will be there next month.

I found the following:

The address is Pava U 39

Instructions:
Take metro M3 to Ferenc Korut (that's where the Museum of Fine Arts is located)
Take the exit marked Ulloi Ut 45-51.
Walk straight ahead for 3 blocks and look right.

I have a Budapest city map and I found the Memorial.

It's located mid-way between metro stops Ferenc Korut and Klinikak.

Pava u runs parallel to Ferenc Korut on the South side of Ulloi Ut only.

Myer, Thank you. That does help! I had been to the web site and found the address, too, but couldn't locate Pava on any map I had. (Well, I really only looked at my LP guide book map. All my maps and paperwork from Budapest are lost somewhere in a black hole that is known as my home office.) The directions are great! Thanks again! Hope you have a wonderful time in Budapest. It is such a great city.

Topping in hopes of a reply from Myer or anyone else who has been to the Holocaust Memorial Center on Pava u.

We returned Thursday evening. I'm still putting together my trip report and attempting to review over 600 photos.

We didn't go to the Holocaust Memorial on Pavu u.

We started in Prague did the Jewish Museum in Prague tour. It's very well done. It's located in half dozen synagogues, buildings and cemetary each with their own theme and fully documented in Czech and English. All sites are within 3 blocks of each other. Thet have a presentation on the Holocaust.

In the main synagogue in Budapest they also have a Holocaust Memorial.

Our plans also included the Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam that of course covers the Holocaust as well.

While I don't want to appear to be trivializing or avoiding depressing presentations, we felt our plans covered the topic fairly completely.

Sorry I couldn't help more.

I'll tell you that even though we may not have gotten our money's worth (trip x single fair might have added up to less than the price of the tickets purchased), we bought transportation passes for the during in both Prague and Budapest for the on/off/no validation convenience.

I'm sure the couple of metro stops to the new Memorial will only take a few minutes.

Their metro is pretty simple to ride. You should do fine.

Thank you, Myer. Looking forward to reading your trip report. I have also been to the sites you mentioned in Prague and the Dahony Synagogue in Budapest. Like you, not wanting to trivialize the importance of these well done and meaningful presentations, I probably won't visit them again on this trip. I wanted to see the new (2004) Holocaust Memorial on Pava u. since I haven't been there before, but it appears as if no one else has, either! I've searched this site, TripAdvisor, Virtual Tourist, LP Thorntree and Frommers with no luck!)With the directions you posted back in May, I have been able to figure out the transportation stops to get there. Thank you so much again for your reply; am awaiting your trip report and pictures!

The Museum in Pave Street is excellent. There is another smaller one within the Dohany Street Synagogue. If in Budapest, do not miss either.
