Holidays in France - how will that affect our travels??

we will be in Paris on May 4-8th then onto Colmar for the weekend of May 8-10th.
When we finalized our bookings, each proprietor mentioned it was a holiday and
requested minimum nights. I think they said it was V Day...

has this holiday impacted anyones travels? do museums and restaurants close
due to the holiday? are there festivals/parades/events that we should know about?
any websites that might explain and educate us?

thanks

Friday, May 8th, is WWII Victory Day aka fete de le huitieme mai aka fete de la victoire de 1945. I haven't been there on that date, but you'd have to check with any specific museum you were thinking of as to whether it was closed. It's certainly not a major holiday like Christmas or NY day when most things are closed. I imagine the hotels said that because it's on a Friday so folks can have 3-day weekends and you are going to a town that is a major tourist destination.

I think they usually have a ceremony at the Arc de Triompher around mid-day.

Here's a document from the Ministre of Defense about it with some photos and explanation

No festivities worthy of mention, but it is a holiday in a number of European countries, and Paris will most definitely be full to the brim.

No strike in May -- but the May Day trade union marches will be bigger and better than ever.

There are 4 bank holidays in May. And if employees take RTT (Réduction du temps de travail) or holiday, or are simply "ill", it can make a lot of non-working days. If the holiday is a Thursday, many "faire le pont" by making it a long weekend.
