For me I prefer being right in the historic center of Florence so I can just walk around. The Holiday Inn site says that the hotel is about three miles away from the train station. You'll need transportation to and from your hotel to get to the center. That's too far to walk for me.

francophile03,
I agree with you, the reason I asked about the Holiday inn was because I have points so i can stay there for 3 nights free of charge. |
I didn't realize this was your only choice. As I said already for myself it is out of the way. Perhaps others can help you out. I'm not sure what other info. you need but you can also check for comments at Trip Advisor.

It is my only choice, but I rather use my points. I also have another choice with points it seems a little closer to the city center. The Sheraton Firenze Hotel
Via Giovanni Agnelli 33 |
we stayed at the florence sheraton a few years back and would stay again. it had free parking and a free shuttle into town at convenient times with free town pick up.( back then)

lincasanova,
thanks, Is there a bus or tram that could take you into the city center also? Is the academia museum walable from the hotel? |
My sister and I stayed at the Holiday Inn in Florence from 10/22-10/31. Modern, clean rooms, very friendly staff. They will store luggage in a locked room while you are out of town. Just across the side street (forget name), you can catch a #23 bus for a 20-minute ride into town. Don't pay for breakfast; it isn't worth the extra money. There's a very nice bar/cafe just about 4/5 doors down - go right outside the front door, cross parking lot of Esso station and turn right. Cost us 2 Euro for a cappucino and a pastry.

i couldnīt tell you but their website should tell all details. i remember we liked this sheraton a little better than the rome one, although they were both a great price and larger than normal rooms.
i THINK this hotel is on the outer belt of florence, visible form the highway? breakfast was expensive, so we decided to have it in town. made the mistake with our two children of SITTING in the back of a little pastry shop. after we went to counter to order a few things, the woman brought them and we were charged a COVER CHARGE for using the table!! (about 4 euros a person or more) it was the biggest rip off of the century. so..be careful in the main square ... it is out of control. |
Prices are different in Italy than here in the US.
There is one price for standing at the bar. An additional price for sitting at the table and often an even more additional price for sitting at a table outside. That is just the way it is in Italy unless you happen to be in a little out of the way area and then sometimes that doesn't happen. |
i know. i live in spain so i was assuming there might be a differnt charge for the price of the coffees, but we ordered at the bar and there was NO ONE in the back empty room, se we took a seat. ( which i imagine in the afternoons is quite busy).
however, it was an outrageous fee that no one would wver have known was to be applied ON TOP OF COFFEE. in fact, i think it was 20-24 euros for the TABLE. it was a "rent a table fee". i have never seen anything like it in 35 years. this is just a warning. it was NOT funny. in fact, we saw the little fine print sign when she brought the things and my spanish husband said " that canīt be.. that must be an afternoon tea price per person". we have bar, table, and terrace pricing in spain, too but this was way out of the ordinary for me. |
Licasanova, I understand, but that is what I am saying. Especially in the heavy tourist areas it doesn't matter that you ordered at the bar, it was the fact that you sat at a table. Outrageous? Absolutely! It has been that way in Italy as long as I have visited there but prices keep going up and the cafe you went to was ridiculous with their prices. I totally agree. But your posting your experience will hopefully be a reminder to those that forget or do not know to ask before they sit at a table what the additional cost will be.

I checked the sheraton website. It mentions the free shuttle, how late does it run? Also can you walk into the city center if you do not mind a nice walk?
Thanks |
doesnīt the website tell you the distance to the center of town?
as i recall, it seemed to be out of town and i certainly donīt remember tempting the idea of a long stroll from there anywhere. |
