Holes in Sorrento and Positano
 

Can anyone recommend 3-4 star hotels in Sorrento and Positano? My wife and I plan to visit in August.

Le Sirenuse in Positano has an excellent reputation and has gorgeous views of both sea and mountains.

In the past we stayed at Hotel de la Ville in Sorrento - we liked it - nice cliffside setting, walkable to town (15 minutes) good sized rooms. It has a small pool and very helpful staff. This May we will stay at Casa Astarita - more of a B & B in the town - we are going for less expensive, 115E for triple. - it has good reviews on Tripadvisor. IMO Sorrento is better as a base for touring - Positano is more picturesque but very hilly and more of a place just to veg. out (well except when you are going up or down stairs!).

We haven't visited in a few years, but did stay a number of times at the lovely Hotel Poseidon. It's a small, family run hotel ( 4-star) just uphill from Le Sirenuse. Rooms vary in size and view, but they are all very comfortable and elegant. We especially loved the food, which was some of the best we had during any of our stays in Italy. I hope that's still true!

In Sorrento, we stayed at Hotel Tramontano, which is very close to the Old Town. Our room was small, but it had a gorgeous view from the tiny terrace of the Bay of Naples. The hotel has a small swimming pool and grainy/pebbly beach.

In Sorrento the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria is pretty. Great views over the Bay of Naples and set in a private garden with nice pool (although the garden opens onto the main square of the town).

Just back from Italy and we spent 3 nights in Sorrento. We usually stay in apartments, but in Sorrento we stayed at Hotel Savoia (www.savoia-hotel.com). It is described as a 2* hotel - we NEVER stay 2*, but it had such good reviews on Tripadvisor so we tried it. We found it lovely - great location just off the main strip, impeccably clean and very comfortable, modern and tastefully decorated, good breakfast, lovely owners.

Thankyou all for your excellent advice. Is it feasible to stay in either Sorrento or Positano and do a day trip between these two towns?

Hi Ronnie - Yes. There are bus and hydrofoil/ferry services connecting Sorrento and Positano (- as well as Amalfi). Buses can be crowded in August ...

I expect Steve_James' statement "Buses can be crowded in August" is not an understatement. We were there in January and the afternoon bus back to Sorrento was overflowing - not a fly could have fitted in!!

I took the bus from Sorrento to Positano in October, the first bus of the day was full... had to wait for the next bus.

I got off in Positano first then took another bus to Amalfi later in the day so that I would have a seat on the last bus of the day leaving Amalfi to return to Sorrento. Didn't want to chance the last bus being full when it reached Positano!

We found it very enjoyable when staying in Sorrento to take the SITA bus to Positano in the morning (sit on the right side of the bus for the best view), but take the ferry back to Sorrento in the afternoon/evening. Avoids the crowds waiting for the bus, which may be full by the time it gets to Positano. And the boat ride was a beautiful way to see the coast (they even have a bar on board).
