Hogwarts Express
I will be visiting the Highlands in October this year with my thirteen year old son and my husband. My son would love to take a ride on the steam train featured in the Harry Potter movies. (I would too!) Can anyone tell me about this train ride - e.g. where does it start/ end? how much does it cost?

here is the website for the steam train. www.westcoastrailway.co.uk/ The Jacobite train looooong predates Harry Potter but whether you ride it for Potter mania or because of the amazing scenery - it is worth it.
Unfortunately the steam train only runs through Sept. But regular trains run the route year round. |
Oh, meant to include the Scotrail site too www.scotrail.co.uk/scotrwhl.htm

Dear Janisj
Thanks for the link! Its a shame about the steam train but it looks worth it anyway! |
Oh yes - it is DEFINITELY worth it. You go over the same viaducts, and through the same amazing country. And you don't get soot in your eyes :)
Once I took it in November and at that time of year you arrive at Mallaig right at sunset so it is even more amazing. But at any time of year it is truly a wonderful train ride. |
If you are going to be in London, you can check Leadenhall Market where they shot the scene for Diagon Alley.

Good luck finding the platform. Last time I was at King's Cross I couldn't for the life of me find the right one. Strange, very strange.

Don't be upset, ipod.
In book 2, Harry couldn't find it either. ((I)) |
To get to platform 9 3/4 you need to go along platform 8 and turn into the side entrance for platforms 9+. The plaque is right in front of you when you go through the arch.
