Hipodromo de la Zarzuela, Madrid
 

We will be in Madrid for the closing day of horseracing at Hipodromo de la Zarzuela. I am trying to figure out how to get there by public transportation. I know it can be done by bus. Does anyone know the best route to take to get there. We will be going on a sunday in November.

Where are you staying in Madrid? That would be helpful...

We are staying in an apartment on Calle Mayor.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Until you get some local experts to chime in, I would do as the racetrack's website says:

As you plan to go on a day where horse races will take place:
Take metro (or city bus) to (Intercambiador de) Moncloa - and take the FREE shuttle bus to the racetrack from there. Leaves from Paseo de Moret, which you can easily spot on Google maps.

Calle Mayor is pretty long, but if you stay close to Puerta del Sol, it will be just a short direct metro ride from there with line 3 to Moncloa.

Thanks. I may take the free bus, however if you plan to return on their bus it leaves at the end of the races and we don't plan to stay that long. I could take it to get there and find my way back on public transport.

Update: For anyone in Madrid who likes to go to the horses and if there is a meet on when you are visiting, it's easy to get there!!

We took the 3 line from Sol to Moncloa and after looking around and not seeing a bus and asking a very nice bus driver parked across the street if he was the one, we found the free bus to the Hipodromo de Zarzuela. It was a very nice, clean, and comfortable bus unlike the one we used in Paris many years ago that had broken air conditioning (it was in the 90's) and was old, dirty and everyone was smoking.

It took about 5-10 minutes to get to the track. It was packed, unlike our sad track, Suffolk Downs in Boston. It was full of families having a great time. The people cheered on the horses like it was the Kentucky Derby, it was great!! We only stayed for two races, but the first one I bet I won. It was a horse bred in the US. The second race I lost by a head. It was really a fun couple of hours, getting to the track and seeing Madrilenos enjoying their weekend.
