Room Mate Alicia. It has modern design in a renovated old building and a great location on the Plaza Santa Ana.

For a good list of hotel options, check out Maribel's Guides at www.maribelsguides.com.

I checked your dates before posting and again just now, and they appear to have at least one standard room available from 97-120 euros.

120 € is that a reasonable rate? I thought something a lot cheaper would be.

That's odd, amif, the site I checked was the hotel's own website, and you can book the room on line.

http://www.room-matehotels.com/eng/m...liciahotel.php

The picture of the standard room shows a double bed, so if all you can get with that booking is a single room, the website is pretty misleading.

I could suggest also the AC Recoletos hotel, close to Retiro Park and the "3" museums. Still central, on a quiet side street - we really enjoyed it and the Salamanca trendy neighbourhood. Rates can go as low as 100 euros or so (as we once managed to get), but I would think that 120-130 euros is still adequate for this hotel.

Plaza Santa Ana would also be an excellent location:
http://www.gomadrid.com/sights/plaza-santa-ana.html

Café Central, the best jazz venue in town since 1982, just off Plaza Santa Ana on tiny Plaza del Ángel. Top musicians every night at 10pm, good food and great atmosphere. Two of the best flamenco tablaos are also 2 mins walking from Plaza Santa Ana: Cardamomo and Casa Patas. http://www.cardamomo.es/

If you have any interest, I would highly recommend to go and see excellent dancers Paloma Fantova and David Paniagua on Casa Patas on the 6th of November. Go for the midnight performance, more festive and unpredictable and up-front singing.

Paloma Fantova: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Glap5Bi5AG4
David Paniagua (his artistic name meaning bread and water, pan y agua): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcTHOmpkX0U&NR=1

I'm a little late getting in here, but I second nikki's recommendation on Roommate Alicia. We loved the hotel, and especially the location. Plaza Santa Ana became our home. Walk to metro, and other important sites. Glad you got in. I think you'll like it.
