Hilton Dresden for 1 night stay
We are arriving by train from FRA and departing by train next day to Prague from Dresden. We see that the Hilton is at $87.00/night.
Is the Hilton conveniently located, walking distance or so to the train station? We will be tired after a transatlantic flight. Any other recommendation is welcome. Also, we are looking for a hotel for a 1 night stay in Nuremberg. Please give us your recommendations. Thanks |
The Hilton is about 1.5 km from the Hauptbahnhof - and right in the middle of the Altstadt of Dresden. It is located directly beside the Frauenkirche.
You can't go wrong with this one. |
Hello epaulino :)
We stayed in the Hilton Dresden a couple years ago, and thought it to be the perfect location for exploring this lovely town. The rooms were nicely appointed, staff was friendly and helpful, and the breakfast was outstanding! (Our rate was breakfast inclusive.) Happy travels! |
For just one night, arriving by train and looking for walking distance to the station I would not recommend the Hilton, sorry. It's right in the middle of the old town/the sights, but not in walking distance to the train station.
Right vis-a-vis the train station is the Intercity Hotel and there is also a Pullman hotel. Both modern style (not my taste), quite small rooms, but with all the comfort you need. I. |
I agree with that, besides I would think it could easily get very noisy around that Hilton.
There is a decent Mercure within walking distance of the station, I believe, if you don't want to be right next to it, but that could be fine, also. The Mercure is farther, although that could be the Pullman Ingo is talking about. But it's not right next to the station. It's on Pragerstrasse, about 300 meters from the station. |
What time the next day are you leaving for Prague? If it's an early morning train, then go for Ingo's suggestion. FYI, the InterCity hotel chain gives guests free passes for local public transportation during the length of their stay, which will help you get into town.
$87 is a good rate for the Hilton...we booked the Radisson for 135€ (as a comparison). Dresden offers great rates for 4 and 5 star hotels! If your train to Prague isn't until the late afternoon, then I would pick the Hilton. The hotel has a pool and a spa (at least that's what the web site says, I admit I haven't been there) and you might want to relax in those. It also has an on-site restaurant in case you want to have an early dinner and then go straight to bed. One final comment: when is your travel? If it's in the summer, another reason I'd pick the Hilton is for the AC. InterCity hotels usually don't have AC (I don't know about the Pullman). I would hate to arrive in Dresden on the hottest day of the year, jet-lagged and tired, and then not be able to cool off in my room. Obviously, this is not an issue for travel outside the summer months. Happy travels! We will visit Dresden in early summer, can't wait! |
You are going to be in Dresden FOR ONE NIGHT...
DO NOT stay "near the train station" whether or not the old town is noisy or anything else.. GET A TAXI and both ways if necessary..you're "saving money" on the wrong things IMO. |
We did not find the Hilton to be noisy at all. Our two rooms were directly overlooking that big mural (can't remember the name), and we never even thought about the crowds outside (and this was during a big festival that went on into the night). It's in the pedestrian area, so walking around is a breeze.
I'm with Dukey. Take a cab. No big deal. You're in Dresden. It's a marvelous city to explore, even if just for a few hours. Happy travels! |
I too stayed at the Hilton. My room faced the town (not the river), and I did not find it noisy. It was, however, very conveniently located!
|
We also stayed at the Hilton in mid-December 2008. Our rooms were very comfortable and very quiet. The staff were incredibly helpful and efficient. We walked everywhere and found its location to be perfect. I would stay there again without any hesitation.

For finding hotels in Nuremberg (and the rest of Germany), I normally use www.hrs.de If you stay close to the central railway station, you're close to the old town. The distance is shown on the website, but make sure by looking on the map that it's really the central railway station.
Nuremberg hosts quite a lot of trade fairs and the prices depend highly on it. I stayed at the NH once which was good but rather pricey. A cheaper but okay hotel is the nestor. You can get there by taxi (around 10 Euro from the railway station or by a tram which stops right in front of the station). |
Thank All for your help.
I booked the Hilton Dresden. Orbitz had a great sale that lasted 1 hour, then I used their Visa 15% promo code for a total of $117. Just one more question on Dresden: Is there train or bus transportation available from the train station to the Hilton? Nuremberg was challenging. There is a fair going on next week and prices are high. I got the Maritim through Orbitz also for $143 total. I cannot thank your enough for your contribution to our trip and for taking your time to help us. Epaulino |
Trams are stopping some hundred meters distance from the Hilton. However, I don't think it's particularly convenient to roll the suitcases along the cobbled streets. Take a taxi, it's not expensive. Maybe 10 Euro, I'd think.
If you want to stick to the trams then there are several choices from Hauptbahnhof: #8 or #9 to Theaterplatz, then walk around the cathedral, then the alley along the big mural (3 minutes). #3 or #7 to Pirnaischer Platz, from there it is five minutes to the Hilton (watch out for the beautiful Baroque house with the ugly modern staircase outside, which is the city museum, walk along that street right of the museum, cross the Neumarkt square and there you are). Assuming you are two people travelling you need to buy two single tickets, each for 1.80 Euro, or a four-single-trip ticket for 6.50 Euro (two forth and two back the other day). They need to be validated (stamped) right after entering the tram. There is a tram/bus info where you can buy tickets right on Wiener Platz in front of the Hauptbahnhof. |
