Hilltowns between Rome and Siena, Siena and La Spezia?

We will be driving from Rome to Siena to spend one night, then on to Cinque Terra the next day. We would like to stop in at least one hilltown (or more, if at all feasible) on the way to Siena, and another on the way to Cinque Terra. What would you recommend?

Between Rome and Siena: Montalcino, definitely. Pienza is nice too. Montepulciano is larger and I didn't enjoy it quite as much.

Pro on Lucca. It's quite easy to get in and out of, has a nice square and great churches, a very good restaurant (Buca de San Antonio), and you can walk its enclosing wall.

Okay, I read another post about Montalcino, and it's made me wonder whether we should stay there instead of Siena! What would you choose? Thank for the ideas about where to stop along the way!
