Hiking Sicilian Volcanoes

Hi, all. I found a tour for a Sicilian volcano hike that looked interesting. I think it would be a lot of fun, but I don't want to do an 8-day tour. Does anyone know of any tour companies that offer one-day hiking excursions for one of the volcanoes? Has anyone taken a tour like this or hiked on their own? Comments?

Before you sign up for a tour that is strictly volcano hiking, try to figure out whether you'd have a problem with the altitude. I got altitude sickness on Mt. Etna at 2,850 meters, and I wasn't even hiking yet. I could barely walk three steps at a time on flat ground.

Hi, Carol. I'm just interested in a one-day hike, not an extended tour. Is that what you did? If so I'd be interested in knowing details. Good point about the altitude. How does one prepare for something like that? Are there "shorter" volcanoes on Sicily where that might not be as much of an issue?

The Volcano on the island of Stromboli (part of the Aeolian Islands chain) is your best best (apart from Mt. Etna). Altitude is only (!) 950 meters. However, it is a very active volcano and should not be attempted without a professional guide. Several weeks ago, a female tourist was killed by flying debris from the crater. A safer choice (but far less scenic: only 500 meters) is the dormant volcano on the island of Vulcano (also part of the Aeolian chain).

Funny you should ask about this. Just a couple of days ago while researching on the web for Lipari hotels, I came across a detailed report about volcano hiking on both Stromboli and Etna. I got to it from a search about Lipari on Google. I don't have time now, but will try to recreate my steps and find it again for you. It was very interesting, but not for me, so I let it go. It was just funny that I got it when looking for a hotel -- I guess it mentioned their staying at a hotel that I was trying to find out about. You might also try a Google search and enter Hiking on Stromboli and probably find the report.

Thanks for the info. Any other words of wisdom?

By the way, the original tour I was looking at was being offer by Adventure Center (www.adventure-center.com). Has anyone used their services?
