Hiking in the Peak District
 

My wife and I will be spending a week in the Nottingham area in late September. We are staying on a narrow boat and would love to get in some gtood long hikes. I have been researching the Peak District since it is so close to our home base. Can anyone narrow down the hikes to three or four of the best (since there seem to be hundreds just in the national park alone)? Also, any information regarding the weather we might expect in late Sept and early Oct would be helpful.

Can't help you with the hikes, but I sure would like to hear a trip report from you when you get back regarding the narrow boats. I've been eyeing them for awhile and wondering what it would be like to stay on one. Please report in!

If your boat happens to be on River Wye,there is a nice but with some climbs walk from Millers Dale to Castleton.<BR><BR>It is part of Limestone way,Millers Dale is a pretty tiny town by River Wye. The magnificent Peveril Castle is near Castleton. It will take about 3-4 hours.<BR><BR>When hiking in U.K.,the weather is always very unpredictable,I have encountered perfect warm weather in late October,and almost freezed to death in June. Warm clothes and rain gears are essential.

Thanks Judy, I'll look into that area. Our boat is out of Nottingham on either River Trent, the Trent and Mersey Canal, the River Soar/GU Leicester or the Erewash Canal. Do you know of anyone who can narrow that down? I've done lots of research but it is nearly impossible to tell what is the "best" way to go after leaving the marina.<BR><BR>I will certainly report in with my version of a travelogue when we return. I haven't seen a whole lot of information regarding the narrow boats on this post, so maybe I can spread the word a little (good or bad).
