It's apples and oranges. The Berner Oberland is more accessible and it's beautiful. The Engadin is less accessible but the villages are fairy-tale like. The Dolomites are an incredible experience too.

It's nice to have a choice.

Thank you all. I'm taking it all in and planning the Engadin (3-4 nites)as well as some time in Wengen (5 nights) before we move on to Italy. Cinque Terre pics were heartbreaking. Fell in love with every bit of it. Hopefully it will recover well by then. More as I know. Again thank you for your thoughtful responses and the enjoyable debate. Dot

PalenQ: Four days in CT was just not enough....We stayed at La Sosta di Ottone III (strange name, amazing location above Levanto), lovely service in an amazing inn. We walked to the train and back most of the time. We were there Sept 4-8 and not overwhelmingly crowded. If you're back and want a quiet getaway, it's perfect. D

One major difference, however, that might matter to many tourists (at least in the current situation) is that the side costs (like public transportation/cable cars etc.) are considerably less in the Engadine than in the Jungfrau region.>

which tells a lot - lot less places to reach - lot less places worth it to run cable cars up to - one reason I love the Jungfrau Region - the Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen Valleys and Murren amphitheatre is because of the panoply of various thrilling aerial cable ways, mountain trains, thrilling gondola rides like the long long cableway to Schilthorn - Europe's highest train station on the Jungfrau - dozens of funiculars and toy-like trains going everywhere and also lake boat rides that are IMO amongst the most scenic and pleasing things to do in all of Switzerland - the Jungfrau Region, as seen by its many more public transit operations has a whole lot more of interest to the AVERAGE first-time tourist IMO than do the Engadine and I have done the Majola Pass bus ride and Bernina Railway and the rail line from Chur to St Moritz and those are fab but unless hiking elsewhere you have little to chose from. So for active folks interested in fairly strenous hikes the Engadine may rival the Jungfrau Region but for the more sedentary types the Jungfrau offers many more easy but also thrilling ways to get around IME - and I do admit I need to explore more of the Engadine but the three times I have been there it just does not excite me the way the Jungfrau Region does even after my about 12th excursion there recently. But whatever turns one on is the best for that person.
