Hiking in Garmisch
We'll probably have 2 to 4 hours to hike in Garmisch. It sounds like the gorge hike is something we'd want to see but it seems short...less than 1k? Has anyone taken any moderate/medium hikes that they would recommend? Are there any where you ride a cable car to the top of a mountain and hike down?

Hi awayfromitall,
Two that I can think of right off the top of my head: Wankbahn Eckbauer You can hit the Partnachklamm on the way down from the Eckbauerbahn. You can get information on all of these at the town's website www.gapa.de Then click on "Tour Planner" and then "Summer Activities" and then "Walking." Have fun! s |
Zugspitz--a don't miss vantage point.
BTW-"awayfromitall", do you ever respond to all the contributors? |
2-4hrs isn't enough time to go to the top of the Zugspitze.
For a chair lift/walk down hike the Hausberg is quite convenient. It'll take you more than 2hrs total - and 4 would be tight unless you want to run down the mountain. Here's the address & GPS coordinates of the chair lift Hausberg 4-8 82467 Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany 47.481983,11.09369 A nice hike would be a stroll around the Eibsee, just a few km SW of town. Several km total & a very enjoyable walk. I prefer the longer hike down the mountain - you could make most of a day out of it. If you're there in May or June you'll stroll through some lush, colorful alpine meadows. |
How long do you think it takes to do the Zugspritze? My tour book seems to imply it's a quick trip to the top.
|
Yes, it's a quick trip to the top of the Zugspitze - but no hike. It's either a cable car trip from Eibsee lake or a cog-train ride from Garmisch via Grainau and Eibsee lake, in the latter case plus a cable car ride from the Zugspitzplatt to the top.
For hikes: I second swandav's recommendation of the Eckbauer - Partnach gorge hike. |
By the way, note the spelling of Zugspitze (not "Zugspritze"). A "spitze" in German is a point, peak, apex.
A "spritze" is a syringe, I believe. |
After being foreced to only eat beans for such a long time , I admire the clear mind Woyzeck still has. Very good!
