Hiking in Capri
 

Hello,

We are traveling to Italy in a few weeks. We are planning a day trip to Capri. We are hoping to hike (although I realize that we have a good chance of it raining every day).

Does anyone know of any good websites (or books) that map out some good hikes?

If you like to go on a good walk and can do steps, do the following. Find the Tod's shoe store in the main square of CapriTown. Walk thru the first archway to the right of the Tod's store. This walk will head up a little bit, then thru the residential area, to a restaurant with a great view near the Natural Arch. This is a 1/2 hour walk. You'll pass a grocery store on the left about 1/2 way if you need to buy anything. Look for Ristorante San Costanzo on Via Marucella, 28 tel: 081 837 7947

The menu at this restaurant looked good - if you can't walk down alot of steps, then eat here and return back to CapriTown the same way. But if you can do steps, I strongly suggest heading down the stone steps at this restaurant towards the coves.

It is a fantastic hike - all paved but lots of steps, and fantastic views. It takes about 45 minutes if you walk a regular pace, or 1:15 if you are slower. There is never a point where you are walking on a path that is not protected, for all who are afraid of heights.

You will pass areas where there are sets of smaller stairs that head down to a cove, off of the path. Don't take these (except for the one that goes to Farangiola) unless you want to walk all the way back up.
The one to take is a sign for Farangiola (phonetically spelled). It is a beautiful cove with aqua water, but you can't see it from the top of the path. The sign is not too well marked, but I recall that it was after the very high scenic overlooks, and had a small sign marked Farangiola. Go down these steps marked towards Farangiola and follow the signs to La Fontelina restaurant at the bottom, and have lunch there. This is the surprise - THE BEST GHNOCCI I ever had.

This cove has a boat that takes you back to Marina Piccola (3 Euro per person if you share the boat), so you don't have to hike it all the way back - which is really nice after you've dined. You can also rent beach chairs there and sit on the rocks and take in the sun. The water at this cove was aqua and beautiful!
Let the owner of La Fontelina know that you want to take the boat back, and he will tell you when it is leaving with other people on it so you get the 3 Euro price, rather than paying or the whole ride yourself.

The ride back to Marina Piccola is about 20 minutes.

Hi adnil. Are you an experienced hiker? If "yes" and you're bringing hiking boots, then the trail to do is the Passetiela. Incredible views and you'll most likely be all alone. Word of caution: do this trail from Capri to Monte Solaro and NOT the reverse, and only if it is dry. Happy hiking. JQ
