Why not stay at the foot of Mont Blanc itself in Chamonix? Lots of strenuous walks with amazing views.

Hi BiarritzTaxi,

Thanks for the suggestion, and that was our first choice, though we will be coming from Beaune and wondered if there was somewhere a little further west that could save some driving time, as we are ultimately making our way down to the Luberon hills and just want to make a hiking 'pit stop' for a couple of nights.

The Jura mountains just north of Geneva are nice but not as steep and spectacular as the Chamonix valley. Further south is the Parc National des Ecrins, might be worth a look.

I would do some research on the walks that you might do before you commit yourself to a particular base.

Cicerone publish some great guides including ones written by a mate of mine, which are very good.
