Highland Games

We will be in Scotland the second week of August. Any information on the Highland Games ? I know there are several - which one is recommended, etc.

Thanks

What part(s) of Scotland are you visiting?

I know there are small-ish games that week in Ballater, Bridge of Allan and at Castle Menzies and probably some others.

There are many more later in the month and in Sept.

Thank you both. I have been frequenting this site enough to know that your advice is a must.

We are still unsure but hope to firm up our travel soon. At this point it looks like we will be leaving Edinburgh after three nights. On the the 19th we will leave for... not sure.

Based on Janisji 's advice. We are leaning toward going to Ayhshire where my husband's clan originates from ( we think ) - for one night and then onto Oban for two nights and over to Stirling for the remainder of our trip. We only have nine days so it's difficult.

But I did notice Highland Games in the Isle of Bute area. So I am wondering if that is feasible ? We really want to enjoy the Games so it would be wonderful to see that. Also any great Celtic Music would be very nice.

Thanks so much

Carolyn

Bute's on the 19th. Are you talking about the week after the dates I gave you?

Given that itinerary, the "best" would be Atholl.

Use this web site to see what music's playing when:-

or buy a "List" magazine when you arrive.

This may be further than you want to travel, but I will throw it into the pot, because it is one of the oldest running Highland Games - The Abernethy Highland Games and Clan Grant Gathering are on the 2nd Saturday of August - this year the 12th at Nethybridge.

What are your exact dates? By the "second week" I thought you meant Aug 6 - 12. But if you are there later the list of games would be different.

Thanks. For exact date - we'll be in Edinburgh for August 15th - 19th. The 19th we will pick up a car and travel to Ayrshire, Oban and Stirling - not in any certain order at this point.
We depart from Glasgow on the 23rd.
