Highclere castle/Downton Abbey
Viewing the Highclere castle site, it shows that it is open for visitors in May (when I will be in London) only 3 days. None of which I will be able to go there. I am wondering is the castle can be viewed from the road? If so, which road?
Thanks, Margo |
Here is the link to Highclere Castle's website:
http://www.highclerecastle.co.uk/index.html There are instructions how to reach the caste by car, train, etc. (from London) on the website. I looked at Google Maps street view and it looks like the castle is set too far back to see it from the road (and the view is blocked by trees/vegetation). |
No, you can't.
I visited last year and there are gates that will prevent you accessing the roads leading up to the house. |
Thanks, Mez, I was afraid that it wasn't viewable from a road. Sorry I will have to miss visiting the castle and not even being able to see it from the outside. It is open more often in the summer months--maybe some other year.

As stated above by Mez, and from what I've read, I don't think you can get a glimpse of Highclere from any of the surrounding roads.
If you don't mind a little hiking though, there are at least two paths/trails that will provide a vista of Highclere: Beacon Hill http://walkingalot.blogspot.com/2011...re-castle.html http://www.flickr.com/photos/vikingman/5540995609/ Wayfarer's Walk/Heaven's Gate http://www.highclerecastle.co.uk/abo...he-estate.html http://www.panoramio.com/photo/25110385 http://www.wayfarerswalk.org.uk/ |
Thanks, bluestar, I would love to do any of the walks. Now I just have to find a way to get to the gate to start the hike!!
