high tea in Paris
 

When I was in London and New York I really enjoyed having afternoon tea at some of the beautiful hotels like Ritz Carlton, the Plaza, etc. Does anyone have a recommendation for tea at a hotel in Paris? And also how much it costs per person?

Afternoon tea (tiny sandwiches, pastries and muffins) is not the same as high tea. The latter is what the working classes traditionally had instead of dinner (which is what they called lunch for some reason) and is/was a hot meal eaten in the evening.

Not sure where to get a traditional British afternoon tea in Paris - but don't look for "high tea".

The reason being that the principal meal of the day is called dinner,even when taken at lunchtime, in which case it is followed by high tea (or supper)in the evening.

High tea still survives in Yorkshire and Scotland and I also met it in a hotel in St. Mary's in the Scilly Islands.
There, high tea was served at 5.30.
Children were not allowed in the dining room at dinner time, so the high tea was popular with families.

We also stayed in a Scottish hotel again where high tea was served from 5-7 pm and dinner was from 8pm onwards. The cooks must have been really busy.
We were told that it was popular with families and locals.

The Plaza Athenee does a very nice afternoon tea in its elegant little lobby salon. It's surprisingly reasonable in price. Attentive service. I like the Darjeeling Margaret's Hope, but they have several teas available. The only downside is that men can also smoke cigars there; on one occasion, it was way too smoky (a big, smelly cigar being smoked by some apparently big name rap star there with his girlfriends, I have no idea who he was), but the other times I was there it was fine. However, the afternoon tea at the PA is the not full blown tea with cakes, scones, etc. at a fixed price. It's all a la carte.
The Mariage Freres salons do a nice tea, but whenever I've passed by one, they were jammed to the rafters with tourists, particularly Japanese groups. For a pot of MF tea in calmer surroundings, I prefer the L'Esplanade cafe over by Les Invalides (right next to the metro stop LaTour Maubourg).
