HEX /Car Service/Tube

I posted this under the wrong post earlier....sorry

I've been reading this post and am wondering about HEX myself.

We are staying at the LSE Northumberland location.

We are flying in to Heathrow and was thinking about taking the HEX to Paddington station and then take the B or N line to Charing Cross. I was told that LSE Northumberland was very near the charing cross station.

My question, how far in walking distance is the LSE location from charing cross?

Of note, I'm athletic, my friend is not and she has problems with leg swelling if she walks too great a distance.

Should we just take a car (I.e., justairports)from the airport or is it better to take HEX and then the tube? We will have one suitcase each and it is only the two of us..and yes we are budget travelers.

Thanks willtravel for the LSE recommendation.

Dwebb, I inadvertently posted on the other thread too, so I'll repost.

I'm glad you got a booking at that great location.

According to the Journey Planner at www.thetube.com it would be an 8-minute walk from Charing Cross to Northumberland House.

Still, it would probably provide an easier start for your friend if you just took a car service. She will need all the energy she can get for London.

In most cases, I'd find a tube-only route to save money, but there's no doubt that it is a little physically demanding if you have any problems with walking.

A hybrid approach works in many scenarios: ride the Tube to town, then hail a cab at the Tube station. Choose a station on the Picadilly line to keep the number of transfers to one.

I've done this walk a number of times as I've stayed at Northumberland last year. I'd say 8 minutes is probably right for the first time traveler with luggage and trying to figure out which direction to go...

The distance is actually very short, about 1 long block. It took me no more than 3-4 minutes to walk (including wait time for the traffic light to cross the street). I definitely would not call it "a distance". If your friend cannot even manage that, I seriously would worry how she'd be able to see London at all.

Put the address or postcode into www.streetmap.co.uk and you get the answer:

Another option might be to get the tube all the way, change at Hammersmith for the eastbound District Line (just walk across the platform) to Embankment. Slightly further to walk up Northumberland Avenue, but cheaper, and far fewer stairs to negotiate.

For two people, I don't know that the HEX is ever a good value. Tube from LHR, yes, but HEX no. Check rates on www.justairports.com.

I'm with Laurie. Don't forget that unless you can sleep well on a plane that you'll need to factor in jetlag. (I'm assuming you'll be on a long flight.)
