This is a tour of traditional houses, farms and the rolling hills of Emmental https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...52fa5ce95.jpeg A church next to a Stöckli, used as storage or accommodation https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d9843f652.jpeg A typical house along the route https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7fe7911f3.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d5f48a871.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...6fdd4290b.jpeg |
Day two coming up
|
Ah man...I so want to be in Switzerland right now...
|
Okay, I'm hooked. Signing up to follow along. Yes, I'm into torture apparently.

Day two (yesterday)
Warning: Lots of traditional houses and countryside. Noteworthy: 1. The area is where the Mennonites/ Amish originate 2. Despite excellent signage, I couldn’t have done it without my cell phone/ Schweiz mobile app / gps. It kept me on the trail 3. I made more one hour coffee stops to recharge my ebike battery. Every bit counts! 4. I did this in sandals 😊 here are some highlights: https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...dd9bc65a3.jpeg A typical Emmenthaler house with garden. Remember, this is way off the beaten path. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...02bd8d546.jpeg This is a bed and breakfast! https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3c009bfee.jpeg The countryside. Gloriously green and untouched by urban sprawl. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...1eeaf71f97.png This is the map I worked with https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...8d78b80ed.jpeg The flying nun’s habit https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e839b32a8.jpeg This was taken from the road. The house was incredibly imposing and so I looked up, snapped the shot and then took a photo opposite the house. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...6b97b88a2.jpeg And this is the photo opposite the previous house.. the gardens! So typical of the area. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...6a2b8b947.jpeg Wheat fields https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...96d3a2a12.jpeg A storage house called a Stöckli. Also used for accommodation. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...257459be6.jpeg The countryside https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...0739cc805.jpeg The paths through the woods https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...b6719236c.jpeg Me, my bike and my backpack. That’s all I needed for two days https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...35aa6e0cf.jpeg Coronavirus hits the Emmental. There’s no Hornuss festival this year. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...047599498.jpeg The countryside again https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...5748b11df.jpeg When electricity first came to the area https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c1886f34a.jpeg The watering cans! https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...08711ac8d.jpeg Hay is stored on the top floor. The houses quite often have the barns built on behind the house. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...35f74f496.jpeg Well, hello photo op https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...837fcb1c6.jpeg A bit of wisdom https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9ebb4e355.jpeg Hotel Bären in Langnau https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...fa9c5d374.jpeg The museum next to it. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...5dfe2d76c.jpeg It’s Monday and many restaurants are closed https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...8b71d96eb.jpeg A footbridge over the Emme River that led me to a train station where I loaded my bike and returned to my home. |
I find riding in Switzerland is almost too easy, but you have a lot of gear there for 2 nights. It is hard to think that in the 1910s Switzerland was the poorest country in Europe. Amazing what value banking-privacy brings to a country.

Your Monday looked better than mine!
I love your photos. So interesting, those buildings with the ‘hooded’ roof. Want to wander down that forest road too. |
I took a daytrip to Langnau from Brienz about 12 years ago ( the summer with the unexpected heat wave that killed many in Italy).
Visited the Chlibihus museum there. I was the only visitor. It was beautiful (akin to the folk art museum in Williamsburg, VA). I loved the gently rolling hills! |
I thought cycling through the area would give me Emmental block but that idea was full of holes.
|
Hardee har!:)
|
What beautiful scenery for a lovely ride. I am jealous 😊

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Big question: where's the pictures of the cheese?!

Taken at a Schaukäserei along the way. It shows how they used to make cheese. |
Thank you!! Love the pictures and the description of your trip!
