Hertz imposes currency conversion charge
 

I just received a notice from Hertz with changes in the #1 club Ts&Cs which states: "A person who rents a car in a foreign country may incur credit or debit card charges in a currency other than the currency of the country in which his or her card was issued. In such case, Hertz may convert the charges into the currency of the country in which the card was issued. If Hertz elects to convert such charges, it may impose a currency conversion charge of up to 3%."<BR><BR>In other words, if your credit card doesn't stick it to you for currency conversion, then Hertz will...or maybe I should say, in addition to your credit card sticking it to you, Hertz will also.

I'm confused. Is this regarding a Hertz credit card? If not, why is its Hertz' business what currency your credit card was issued in? (What are Ts & Cs?) Sorry if I'm dim...

Sounds to me like Hertz will convert the bill to USD before presenting it to the credit card cos, saving them the trouble of doing so. Of course they'll take the 3% conversion fee that the credit card co. would have taken.

This is nothing new. We rented a car in Scotland from Avis and needed to change the reservation which was originally set in US dollar. They wanted to charge the additional fee in dollar using THEIR ridiculous conversion rate. I insisted the charge be done in local currency. I prevailed that time but it appears that the car rental companies are trying to institutionalize this practice as a source of additional income...

Hertz # club keeps your information on file and when you show up at the rental car location, you just pick up your car without having to go to the counter. Speeds up the process. There is a standard agreement which goes along with it which is pretty much their standard renters agreement. I would imagine the agreements presented to those who have to present at the counter every time have the same new language (the stuff on the back or in fine print that no one bothers to read because they're in a hurry to hit the road when they get there).

Nothing Hertz does would surprise me. Afterall, they didn't honor their contract with us and I have been warning people not to use them. C'est la vie.

We also have been overcharged by Hertz.Dropping the car off in Nice and another time in Paris. It took a lot of time but we eventually were ungraciously repaid for unknown charges added in French, which we did not read at the time as we were checking in at the airport. Just as bad as the small print but in sprawling scribble. Gotcha!! However if you persist its worth it.
