herrenchiemsee vs another day in munich
 

Hi guys, our IT next week would be from Salzburg we would stay overnight i Prien A Chiemsee so that we can visit herrenchiemsee the next day before going to munich. As such, I would only have 2 days in Munich. We are planning to take a tour the next day but the tour starts at 9 from Fussen which is might be too early for us since we just came from Prien A Chiemsee the day before-seriously considering to drop Herrenchiemsee-any suggestions????

We loved and would not miss Herrenchiemsee. Why go to Munich if you need to be at Fussen at 9am - why not stay in Fussen that night? (But if you are just going to Neuschwanstein then I would just bag that - since it doesn;t nearly measure up to Herrenschiemsee.)

About Herrenchiemsee:

it is the largest of the four Ludwig "builds" with more than 200 rooms

the interior is decorated far more elaborately than any of the others including Linderhof

the Herrenchiemsee "Hall of Mirrors" is even larger than its namesake at Versailles

Interior tours only include about 20 rooms

I'd definitely opt for Herrenchiemsee and skip Neuschwanstein.

Now, that said, if you want to see a bunch of decorated interiors IN Munich itself, go to the Residenze or the Nymphenburg.

I just opted to go straight to Munich from Vienna then will just go to Prien A Chiemsee to visit Herrenchiemsee the next day( this would avoid us from transferring from one hotel to the other)- we could probably do that upto 4 or 5 pm. Then we will just sleep early to catch the early train to fussen to be able to avail the tour that starts at 9.

What is the usual time frame of visiting Herrenchiemsee? Will it take the whole day or would 3-4 hours would suffice (excluding the 1 hr travel)?

As usual in southern Germany, you cannot visit Herrenchiemsee on your own but you have to wait a set time for a tour. This is you actual procedure: first there is a small train from Prien town to the little harbour, then a ferry. As you get out of the ferry you buy the museum ticket and reserve your time frame. You have to walk 20 minutes in a park or take a horse cart to get to the castle. The visit is not very long (only half of the castle halls were completed), then you have all the procedure back. If you manage to board an early ferry (say at 9am) the crowd will be smaller and you may get back on the mainland by lunch time.

The whole thing is very nice in good weather, but I guess that doing the walk under the rain would not be so nice.

That extra train trip adds 2 hours of train travel since Prien is 1 hour from Munich. It is possible to spend all your nights in Munich and simply to STOP OVER in Prien, which is on the Vienna-Munich train line (use station lockers for bags) then continue to Munich for the night. If you leave Vienna by 9 or 10 and have a 6-hour stopover in Prien you'll be in Munich by 8 pm.

You can also opt to walk from the main rail station to the ferry dock; the pathway is easy to find and part of it is parallel to the rail tracks. Asps has, IMO, given you the basic procedure. There are other tours of the interior but they are in German so you'll have to wait for one given in English.

If you don't mind not having something in your spoken language the whole thing might take less time.

I agree with the notion of visiting as early in the day as is feasible. The site is a very popular one.

I believe that that little toy train - a real train - does not always run but in tourist season and on weekends (I may be wrong but my point is it is also a short walk to the dock if you don't want to take the little train.

Herrenchiemsee is the Bavarian Versailles because it was modeled after the original near Paris. Yes stop en route from Vienna to Munich stop at Prien like fussganger suggests and save relocating hotels, always a chore and takes a lot of time.

No way you can get to Neuschwanstein from Munich by 9 am - takes over 2 hours by train to Fussen alone. If you skip Herrenchiemsee you could go all the way through Austria to Fussen, via Innsbruck, Garmisch, Germany and Reutte, Austria then a short bus ride thru a gap in the hills to Fussen and stay the night there.

Then move on to Munich the next day.

I did the trip to herenchiemsee . Walked from the station - easy walk with 4 children. We came from A suburb of Munich for the day . We all enjoyed the tour .

If it is out of service it will be replaced by a bus, operated by the same company. You can look up the timetable by searching for "Stock Hafen Schiffsanleger" instead of Prien as your destination at the DB web site. Or download a train / boat time table at:

Sure is - Thanks Dukey - I did not ride the train because it looked pretty full and I could walk about as fast as the train went - reminded me kind of a zoo train on rails.

thanks- my mother and I decide to stay the night in Prien in case it rains on that day at least we can do Herrenchiemsee the next day if we can do Herrenchiemsee in the late afternoon then we can catch the early train to Munich and have time to stroll around Munich then we will spend the next day in Fussen.
