My fear is simply thi: if the tour leader is that ignorant about clothing, I would fear commensurate ignorance about just about every other issue that might arise.

It is not the bad advice per se that trouble me, it is the ignorance behind as the driving force that bothers me.

Ignorance is not usually confined to a single issue.

Is it possible the choir director's only information about Italy comes from old, old movies????

He actually took the choir to Italy 4 years ago.

Having been on a few group church choir tours myself, I think it is entirely possible to be on a group tour and almost never interact with normal residents of the country. At your hotel, you encounter service personnel in uniforms. You eat most meals in hotel meeting rooms. At the museums, etc. you are on a tour with others in your group. You never take public transportation. I can see where you could visit lots of countries that way and never have a good idea of how the residents actually dress.
