Henry iv Rive Gauche vs. Residence Henry IV

OK, how many Henry IV hotels are in Paris? so far, I found three and I can't choose between this two...

Henry IV Rive Gauche
-better price
-better location
- waiting for confirmation

Residence Henry IV
-Apartments
-I got email with rates (little discount, not much from the info that is in website)
-also good location

Both have good reviews here and tripadvisor

Other question, what do you think about tripadvisor? I like it but now that I'm looking for a paris hotel, some reviews look fake to me.

I don't know about those Henri IV hotels; I also found a bunch, as I've been looking for hotels in Paris, but I'm not staying in any Henri IV places.

As for Tripadvisor, I have relied on it, combined with this forum and sometimes other websites for opinions on hotels, and have always been satisfied with my accomodations. In choosing hotels for my upcoming Paris-London excursion, I have used it, Fodor's, and venere.com to make my decision. I feel pretty confident that I know what I'm getting. I guess you're never for sure until you see it yourself though! But try using it in combo with other sources.

It took me awhile to realize that 'Residence Henry IV' was a different place than 'Henry IV R.g.'... so I'm wondering if any posters on TA made comments about the 'wrong' hotel.
Of course, if all the comments are consistently good, then it doesn't matter much.

I stayed at Residence Henry IV in May with my two daughters, 18 and 21. We loved it. I actually found it by accident when looking for Henry IV RG which had been so highly recommended on this site.

I got a great "early bird" online booking price and it was the perfect accomodations for us. I paid 180 euros a night for a 6 night stay and we had a great, very spacious 2 room apartment with a big bathroom and tiny kitchenette. If we had wantd to actually cook full meals it would not have been great but it was wonderful to have a fridge and a couple of burners so we could eat breakfast in the room every day.

There are a few great bakeries very close but one of the most fantastic in Paris, Boulangerie Kayser, is right around the corner. I'd go out in the morning while my girls were getting ready and buy croissants and other goodies (the most amazing sandwiches for picnics!)and we'd have our yogurt and juice in the fridge and feast on fresh bread and nutella every morning.

The location of Residence Henry IV is ideal, 5-6 minute walk to Notre Dame, the thick of the Latin quarter, and a small metro station, but at the end of a quiet culdesac overlooking a lovely little park.

For us, it definitely beat a triple room in a regular hotel. We had two very large rooms, one with double bed that became 2 twins and one with a couch that was opened into a full size bed with plenty of room for a good sized table for meals and a small balcony we could go out onto that overlooked the park below.

There is a 24 hour desk and a very helpful and friendly English speaking staff, although it was clear they appreciated my daughter's fluentcy in French and my little attempts as well.

They made numerous dining reservations for us by email request before we got there and continued to be happy to make reservations and to help us in any possible way. I highly recommend this place, in particular if you need 2 rooms and really want a fridge.

In June, we stayed at the Henry IV Rive Gauche. Address is: 9-11 Rue Saint Jacques. It is only a few blocks away from Notre Dame. We asked for a room in the back and it was very quiet. We were very pleased. The staff was quite helpful plus the location was very convenient.

plafield -- thanks for your post. I booked Henry IV on Early Bird rate for 85 Euro/night for a February 2007 trip and I have been worried thinking that no decent hotel could be so cheap! Based on your info I think I'll keep it and use my extra euros on food. :)

Could someone please post a link to this hotel/residence that has the early bird rate? Since there are so many Henry IVs, I am confused.

Thanks

I think there are at least three, but the other one is a realy cheapo dive (1* or so) on one of the islands. They probably don't even have a website.

I like tripadvisor and use it a lot. Just read things for info and to get a consensus. Why do you think a review sounds fake?

Thanks for the comments, I see that I'm not the only one

Any others with comments or input regarding the Henri IV Rive Gauche Hotel?

francophile03 Nov 6th, 2006 11:40 AM

Trip Advisor is a good source in addition to doing a search here for the hotels. I just don't understand if it would really matter if anyone else gave additional comments. I've stayed at hotels where there were many positive reviews yet I did not think the hotel was that good. And I've stayed at hotels that got mixed reviews and either came away agreeing or disagreeing. It's all a matter of personal opinion.

I stayed at Henri IV Rive Gauche in March. It was a charming hotel in a great location. The metro is about a block away, and there are tons of restaurants within walking distance of the hotel.

The staff was wonderful and since it is a small hotel they get to know you well. I was there with my sister, we were 21 and 23, and felt incredibly safe. Our room was very spacious. We had a "couch" when you walked in (great for laying all of the packages) and two twin beds that were pushed together.

It's not luxurious and they don't have a conceierge that can give you recommendations for restaurants, so be prepared when you arrive! I recommend the hotel if you want a comfortable place to stay without the extra ammenities.

Another vote for Henri IV R.G. We were there last May. Clean, quiet, and can't beat the location. It was nice to hear the Notre Dame bells in our room.

I stayed one night at Henry IV at Place Dauphine on Aug. 26, 2013, in room 20, and it was without a doubt the filthiest room I've ever encountered. I'm a budget travel veteran and have no problem with old facilities and walk_up stairs, but this place had so much grit on the linoleum floor that I had to brush off my feet before getting into bed. The stairwell was no different, and the bathroom was so filthy I refused to take a shower. The toilet was disgusting, the mattress way past worn out, the bedspread dirty and a very rude woman at the desk. I'd made my reservation months in advance, so it wasn't like they gave me the last room available, When telling them I was leaving they "miraculously" had a better room available. So beware of this place. I'll be challenging the charge for the second night that the woman said she 'had' to charge me.

The Henry IV on Place Dauphine is not the same as Henry IV Rive Gauche. The former is a "budget" hotel. I stayed at Henry IV Rive Gauche in 2010 and would definitely recommend it for both the hotel itself and the location.
