Helsingor Vs Frederiksborg Castle

We have only four days in Denmark (Friday, Sat, Sun and Monday).

We will maybe go around Copenhagen attractions for the first two days. Then Sunday, take the train to either Kronborg Castle in Helsingor or Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerod then to Louisiana Museum on same day. (Louisiana Museum is closed on Monday).

I went to check the train schedule. Apparently it is not possible to visit the two castles and the Louisiana Museum in a day. So I am either choosing the Kronborg Castle or the Frederiksborg Castle in the morning and leave early afternoon for Louisian Museum for the rest of the day before heading back to Copenhagen (our main base).

What do you suggest we see: the Kronborg or the Frederiksborg? which is more exciting or worth seeing between the two?

Helsingor is closer by train to Louisiana but I would not mind the distance if Frederiksborg is much better and we can make it to the museum from Hillerod.

Thanks for your input. I would appreciate it.

We saw all in one day - but had a car. Why not just rent one and make life simple?

Hi trav,

Frederiksborg is our favorite castle in the whole world.

It's stretching it a bit if you do 2 castles and a museum in a day.

I believe the train from Hillerød (where Frederksborg Slot is located) to Helsingør (Elsinore) goes by the hour, so if you miss it (like we did), you have to wait another hour in the station. In our case, instead of waiting, we went back to Copenhagen, visited Rosenborg Slot and the town of Roskilde. Next day, we went directly to Kronborg and the Louisiana Museum.

If you don't have time....between the two castles, we really liked Frederiksborg better and enjoyed our stroll through the village and the gardens of the castle.

Also preferred Frederiksborg. Do pictures help you decide?

Rent a car and do it all in one day.

If you have to choose just a castle, then Frederiksborg is better, but to get from there to Louisiana via public transit is a PITA and will take you an hour and a half. Driving would take maybe 30 minutes.

Rent a car.

tg - Can see Frederiksborg outside the window of my office. :)

Helsingor is creepier on a rainy day and for me, held much more historic and cultural relevance. Hamlet's castle vs eye candy? To me it's a no brainer.

The only connection between Helsingor and Hamlet is the similarity in the name.
