Help with Venice Trip?

I just returned from a marvelous trip to Italy and wish to return to Venice and surrounds. My recent trip Included Venice and points east, west and south of Florence plus Cinque Terre and as far south as Capri. I do not wish to return to either of those sites though I loved my time there. It did not include any sights on the west coast of Italy. I find I have about 3 days/nights left on this new itinerary. Do you have suggestions that will not include expensive round trip travel in terms of time and money. The Lake Como area does not fit the bill though I would love to visit there in the future. I am not adverse to flying someplace if it is a hub (or neat a hub) from which I can easily return to USA.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

I'm a bit confused by your post. Here is what I understand:

You recently returned from a trip that included Venice, Florence, Cinque Terre, Capri, and some other places. You have yet to visit anyplace on the east coast.

You hope we will offer suggestions to fill 3 days of your new trip/itinerary, which includes Venice, but not "either of those sites." Do you mean you don't want to revisit Florence, Cinque Terre, and Capri? Or do you mean you don't want to revisit any of the other places you went aside from Venice? If that is the case, you should tell us the other places that you already visited.

What is your new itinerary that has 3 days to fill? Does it include anyplace besides Venice? Knowing the complete itinerary will help us make suggestions that are both time- and cost-conscious.

Portofino?

Maybe take the train from La Spezia to Portofino and then continue on to Nice, France. Visit Monte Carlo and Cannes and just enjoy being on the Mediterranean. Easy access. Flat access in the French part of the trip. La Spezia to Cannes is about 5 hours. Monte Carlo, Nice and Cannes are within about an hour of each other. Fly back out of Nice to the US. That stretch is just beautiful, but you may not be interested in going into France.

My previous trip included Florence, Tuscany, Cinque Terre, Lucca, Pisa, Rome, Naples, Capri and the Amalfi Coast in addition to Venice. I do not wish to return to any of those places except Venice. I will spend a several days in Venice and Murano/Burano. I can extend my trip an additional 3 or so days.

The idea of Portofino is promising. TY

Trieste is only an hour from Venice by train and is very pretty. From there you can easily venture into Slovenia etc

Portofino is not far from le Cinque Terre and looks very much like le Cinque Terre.

It is usually fairly easy to fly from the US to either Milan or Bologna. From either city, Verona is very easy to visit on the way to Venice. Depending on what time of year you a traveling you could include a day trip to Trento from Verona, or a day trip to Ravenna from Bologna.

I just spent a very happy hour watching the Veneto edition of Italy Unpacked in which chef Giorgio Locatelli and art expert Graham Dixon Wright explore the art and food of a particular region:

Based in or around Venice you could see Padua, Vicenza and even Verona by day trips or by staying somewhere else with a good rail connection. Plenty to see and do however long you've got.

I really liked Trieste, but it's a busy port city, not a quaint little town. There is an old town center with a 15th century castle and a cathedral that's even older. The cathedral has excellent Byzantine mosaics. There's also a Roman theatre in Trieste.

Trieste and the whole region it's in was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until after WW I. The city had a large Italian population, but the surrounding countryside was mostly Slovenian, and there was a significant German-speaking minority. Parts of the region are still mostly Slovenian.

We stayed north of Trieste, in Duino, which has an atmospheric castle overlooking the sea. The famous Austrian poet, Rainer Maria Rilke, spent some time there, guest of the noble Thurn and Taxis (not joking!) family. One of his major works, the Duino Elegies, was written when he was there. Duino has a marked Slovenian presence, with bilingual signs, and Slovenian specialties in the restaurants.

Sort of on the way from Venice to Trieste is the ancient city of Aquileia. There are some wonderful ruins of a Roman port there, and the remains of a very early Christian basilica (under the present basilica), with some excellently preserved mosaics.

All of this would be easier with a car, but there are city buses for the short trip from Trieste to Duino, and you can get to Aquileia by train to Cervignano and bus from there (a little over an hour, depending on connections).
