Help with TVG

I was looking at the TGV sight to get an idea of how much the tickets are from Paris to Avignon. We will be staying in the 1 rst. district at Hotel Londres Saint Honore so it looks like Gare de Lyons is the departure station. I figured out that Avignon TVG (84) is what our destination will be but for the Gare de Lyon it has Gare de Lyon A and plain Gare de Lyon. Does it matter which one I choose. What's the difference between the 2 of them.

I've did a TGV ticket check on the SNCF site and only got Gare de Lyon, no "A". I'll keep looking. Perhaps it is the track ID.

Michel_Paris Nov 28th, 2007 01:58 PM

SNCF pull down menu only lists Gare de Lyon, no "A".

There is only one Gare de Lyon, and it's your only choice of train station to get the TGV to Avignon other than the station at CDG airport.

I took the tgv from Paris to Avignon in September 2007.
Paris Gare de Lyon to Avignon
ticket was 64.90 Euros I took the 7:54 am and arrived in Avignon at 10:31. Great ride.
When you get ready to get off at Avignon have your bags ready to go. The train didn't stop for very long. It had a nice lounge area for coffee, croissants etc.
If you are renting a car in Avignon go across tracks to where the car rental area is. You won't see it when you get off train.

I just did the reservation again, the pull down box definitely says PARIS GARE DE LYON (75) PARIS GARE DE LYON A (75) AND PARIS GARE DE LYON RER (75), so, again, what is GARE DE LYON A

StCirq Nov 28th, 2007 04:06 PM

Well, RER line A runs to the Gare de Lyon, so maybe that's the reference. At any rate, you're not traveling on the RER and there is only one, repeat one, Gare de Lyon, and it's not a big station and you'd have to be blind to miss the TGV lines, so I'd cross this off your worry list and move on to something a bit more pithy.

The TGV lines running to the south seem to leave from a separate section of the Gare de Lyon--at least that was the case last time we took the train. The area was at the left-hand side of the station as you face the tracks.

I take the TGV at least once a year to Avignon and have paid from 19€ in 2nd class to 40€ in 1st class -- but I have always reserved at least 2 months ahead of time.

suze1, don't worry about Gare de Lyon or Gare de Lyon A. If you put Dep. Paris and Arr. Avignon, the site will automatically give you (at least when I tried) Paris-Gare de Lyon to Avignon TGV. As to Gare de Lyon A, I don't know what it is and there is Gare de Lyon RER too. Even if you have to choose one of those, you will get the same offer Gare de Lyon to Avignon.

Thank you all for your help. I'm going to make the reservations way ahead of time to get PREMS. Is 1rst. class worth paying more?

Also, if I make a reservation for (2) will the computer automatically give me 2 seats together.

altamiro Nov 29th, 2007 08:57 AM

>will the computer automatically give me 2 seats together

As long as 2 seats tgether are available. Otherwise it will look for seats as close together as possible

kerouac Nov 29th, 2007 09:04 AM

Frist class is not an enormous difference, but when the site is offering a 2nd class ticket for 30€ and a 1st class ticket for 40€, I go for 1st class. And on the SNCF site, you will regularly see 1st class tickets on sale for less than 2nd class.

kerouac Nov 29th, 2007 09:05 AM

(I meant 'not an enormous difference in comfort>/b>'.)

PalenQ Nov 29th, 2007 09:11 AM

I would sy Underhill has it right

there are two sections of TGV platforms - one close to the station front and another up and over to the left and maybe this is A

but for all practical purposes the station is all one train shed.
