Help with travel logistics Dubrovnik to Hvar - Ferry Schedule Issues
[I'm reposting this with a more decriptive title as kindly recommended by a helpful advisor; apologies to anyone reading it the second time!]
My boyfriend and I have booked flights into and out of Dubrovnik from 16th to 24th August. We wanted to spend four nights in Hvar, but I stupidly neglected to check ferry times til now and it looks like we just won't be able to make it; there's no ferry out til the 21st, and the only one back's on the 22nd! Two questions then: firstly, is it likely that 'local boat services' will take us on the days we were hoping (19th - 23rd)? Secondly, where would people recommend as a more accessible alternative to Hvar? I was so looking forward to it!
Any suggestions would be much appreciated- thank you!

Carta Pisana is giving you good advice. The bus trip is a lovely adventure in itself. Be sure you grab seats on the left side of the bus going from Dub to Split as you will get the best view of the fabulous scenery.
The bus station in Split is right at the harbor, and it is only a couple hundred yards, at most, to the ferries that go to Hvar. Check with the ticket sellers as to where the cat to Hvar loads, as they sometimes dock at different spots, depending on traffic.
While you are waiting, take a seat at one of the cafes and order an "iced coffee". You will get a really delicious ice cream/coffee concoction. They don't seem to understand the concept of coffee with ice cubes, but who cares. Their version is lovely!
An alternative are the gelato stands that line the street. Any excuse for trying another flavor.

Thanks so much for the tips- the bus/cat option sounds like a fantastic idea. Can't believe it's even quicker than the direct ferry! I'm so excited I do get to see Hvar after all- and Split into the bargain too!
Would people recommend booking the travel in advance? And, finally, any tips on accommodation that might still be bookable in Hvar at this late stage? I know it's a bit tight there...
Thank you!

Check this web site for Hvar accomodations:

As for booking travel in advance - there are numerous buses to Split, it's just a matter of finding out the times (though it will be peak season). As for ferries - I emailed Jadrolinija about buying catamaran tickets for Split to Bol in advance and was told not possible. I would suggest catching an early bus to Split - check Jadrolinija for times.

For Hvar island, you want the catamaran to Jelsa. It goes via Bol which is on the island of Brac. When I used this service, there was no bus from Jelsa to Hvar town, so I had to take a taxi.
I'd suggest doing a round trip using the direct ferry between Dubrovnik and Stari Grad (Hvar) in one direction, and going the other way via Split. The coastal ships have restaurants, lounges, sun decks, etc, and it is a beautiful journey. The buses between Dubrovnik and Split run about every hour and you can just buy tickets at the bus station. If you have time in Split, there's a left luggage office in the bus station, so you can explore the city - Diocletian's palace is near the port and bus station.

If you gotta have Hvar, and you're booked into Dubrovnik until the 19th, then your best bet is take the coastal bus from Dubrovnik on the 19th (11:00 AM-4:00PM). As it's August, go first thing in the morning to purchase (reserved) seats so you don't get shut out.
In Split near the bus terminal, SEM Marine is selling Hvar catamaran excursion tickets that leave for Hvar at 1900. Here's a link:

If there are seats left, you can take the Jadrolinja ferry from Stari Grad on Hvar Island on the 22nd, leaving at 8:30 AM. The ferry is a great ride. You could take it all the way back to Dubrovnik (arriving at 3;00 PM). Or, if you don't mind getting up early, you can get off in Korcula and spend the night and catch the 6:30 AM bus to Dubrovnik on the 23rd.
You might have to wing it on the accommodations (SOBE). Just make sure you can get ferry reservations.
