Help with travel from Salzburg to Venice
 

Hello there! I lurk here constantly and have gotten plenty of information for my upcoming trip without having to ask questions. But now I need help.

In the midst of my trip, I will be traveling from Salzburg to Venice. This will be on Oct 10. I have looked into train travel and am dissapointed that it will take over 8 hours if I go this route. I have also looked into flying, but it seems that there are very few airlines that have a route beteween these 2 places. And the cost was VERY high - $520.

My question - is there some other way that I'm overlooking or not thinking of?

I would be open to any suggestions or ideas.

Overnight train is comfy and saves hotel costs and arrive bright and early.

If you took an early train to Vienna you could fly Sky Europe to Venice for 1 cent plus tax. But I'd take the train for the view - the trip south from Innsbruck is spectacular. If you leave early in the morning or arrive in the evening its only six and a bit hours, but on a different route.

Sure, it's a long trip, but it's one of the most beautiful train trips ever.

The train we took went pretty much due south through Villach and not west to Innsbruck and then south and east. That makes the trip quite a bit shorter - more like 6 hours than 8 hours.

Check our www.bahn.de. There are several of these, including an overnight with no transfers. The scenery is a destination in itself, though.

I agree with Robertino, we took the train from Munich to Venice, 7 hours... but it was beautiful! If you travel by night, you do save a hotel fee but its not all that easy to sleep on a moving train and your pretty spent by the time you get where your going (thats me anyway) I preferred to travel by day, see the views and relax. We left early so we arrived in Venice at 2pm... plenty of time to walk and explore.

Keep in mind that those timings taking a little more than 6 hours are from city center to city center.

When you add in the time to get to an airport, check in, go through security, fly, then wait for luggage and then get from the airport near Venice into the city itself...plus the checked luggage restrictions...those 6 hours don't seem so long.

And even if you took the longer route the scenery is still spectacular in the mountains.

Looks like I'll be taking the train!!

At least I'll have beautiful scenery to look at along the way.
