Help with trains, please
 

Excuse the double post, but I need to put this under both Germany and Austria.
We arrive in Munich and want to take the train to Fussen for Hohenschwangau. After two days, we go to Salzburg.
I tried to put the itinerary into the German rr site www.bahn.de and got a wierd schedule that took 19 hours. Then I tried Rail Europe and can't figure out the connections because you can only look at one country at a time--Austris OR Germany. Can someone tell me how to use a site, and which site will be best to figure the schedule from Munich to Fussen and Fussen to Salzburg. Do I have to go clear back to Munich? Can I go through Innsbrook?

2nd question: I'm not clear on the Select Pass rules about adjacent countries. Would that work for Germany, Austria and Hungary--or not because Germany, while adjoining Austria is not adjoining Hungary??

Hi Vera.

According to a map on the ricksteves.com website, Germany-Austria-Hungary works as a SelectPass combo.

Also, you might pose your itinerary questions to the people at euraide.com - I believe their main office is in Munich.

How much train travel do you have other than what's mentioned here? If you haven't already bought a railpass, you might want to check with railsaver.com to see if point-to-point tickets would cost less than the pass.

Clarification of something that might not be obvious - - you CAN put ANY post "under" more than one country, by using the Control key and clicking on as many countries as you like.

Thanks to both Rex and Rookie. I did not know that I could post under both categories so easily--Thanks! And I will check the sites you mention. I did fiddle around until I found out ath spelling COUNTS! Fussen works if you spell it Fuessen.
We will be traveling parts of five days by rail. In addition to Munich-Fuessen-Salzburg, Salburg-Budapest-Vienna-Munich.

I seem to making one step forward and one step back. Railsaver seemed wonderful, slickly converting my itinerary into a set of rail passes and individual ticket recommendations--however I can't find anywhere that actually has the individual tickets as low in price as they claim. Are they usually accurate? EG they say Munich to Fussen is approx. 21 US Dollars, but german rail site says Eur 27. A BIG difference. Can I trust railsaver?

Fuessen is the last stop going south from Kaufbeuren or Augsburg. Then you have some big mountains and another country. Sorry, no track east or south.

You might try to find a bus over to Innsbruck and then catch a train to Salzburg.

Buy your tickets when you get to Europe to save beaucoup bucks. If you are considering a rail pass (it does not seem reasonable by your itinerary) look at other sites. e.g. raileurope.com and compare prices. Rail passes are only economical if you are using the trains a lot.

You're right. I was looking at the price for two people, which is EUR 27.20, making it a bargain!
Next question--I can't figure out how to get prices on the Austrian rail site. www.oebb.at
I like the advice to take a bus to Innsbrook and train from there to Salzburg. After getting lots of convoluted schedules by putting in Salzburg VIA Innsbrook, I separated them in two trips and got logical connections.

If you are interested in 2nd class train travel,you can purchase a Bayern Lander Karte in Munich, which costs 22Euro and allows up to 5 people to travel together for that price (after 9am m-f) or a Schoenes Wochenende Pass which costs 28Euro on Sat/Sun. You must use local (RE/RB) trains, however. Likewise, when leaving Fuessen, you can purchase the Bayern Lander Karte and go to Salzburg through Munich, again sticking to RE/RB trains. These stop more often/take longer, but if you don't mind that and are ok with 2nd class, they are a good deal.
