Help with Switzerland trip!
Hi,My husband and I are planning a trip to Switzerland for about 7 days with our boys aged 6 and 3.We are travelling mid-October,and will be staying in Badragaz with family.
We would be using the train on all 7 days,so is the Swiss Saver pass the best option for us?Also we will be staying in Davos for night,is it possible to use the Saver pass to go on the Glacier Express from Davos to St.Moritz? Also apart from skiing, what is there to see in St.Moritz?Would also like to know if there is a chocolate factory which is near Badragaz? We are also planning a trip to Mt.Titlis,I have read that in October, the glacier park is closed, will there be other activities mid October?Any responses to these questions will be appreciated, thanks in advance. |
Swiss Pass: all depends on your itineraries. Compare the price of the Pass with point to point ticket fares resp with the Half Fare Card (plus half fare point to point tickets)
Fares and timetables: http://fahrplan.sbb.ch/bin/query.exe/en (the first fare shown is half fare, choose "no reduction" for full fares) Trains to Davos and St. Moritz (every hour) are covered by Swiss Pass. Skiing at Davos or St. Moritz is not possible in October, as there will be no snow. There are many fine viewpoints and glaciers that can be reached either by cableway or on hiking trails. If you go over to SwissRailPasses.com they have a ton of information and articles.
Personally I thing you should take the Glacier Express or other local train from St. Moritz to Chur. That has some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. |
Thank you so much!

Personally, I think you may find the town of St. Moritz to be about as dull as it gets in terms of the overall look of the place. IMO it is one of the ugliest places in Switzerland but to each their own.

Some picutres form the "ugly" St. Moritz area:

We would be using the train on all 7 days,so is the Swiss Saver pass the best option for us?>
Yes the 8-consecutive-day Swiss Saverpass would be the best even if only there 7 days if traveling every day that is a no-brainer IMO -and kids get a Free Family Pass so they never ever pay anything to travel - even on things that the Swiss Pass only gets a discount on like gondolas to mountain tops - kids always go free. For lots of great info on Swiss trains check out these IMO fantastic sites: http://www.budgeteuropetravel.com/id3.html; www.swisstravelsystem.com; www.ricksteves.com and www.seat61.com. |
Also we will be staying in Davos for night,is it possible to use the Saver pass to go on the Glacier Express from Davos to St.Moritz>
Yes it covers the basic rail fare but you still must pay a not insignificant supplement to ride the official Glacier Express - rather take the Bernina Express over the same route from Davos and the supplement there is just a few francs. In fact you cannot take the GE from Davos to St Moritz directly so it's the Bernina Express you are talking about - starts from Davos and goes up the fantastic Albula Pass to St Moritz. |
necker, dukey didn't say the AREA was ugly, he was referring to the town itself. And I agree with him. The area around it may be beautiful, but the town itself is devoid of charm. Even those photos you recommended show the area not the town itself -- except for shots taken from a "safe" distance up on the mountainsides.

I wouldn't call St Moritz ugly but glitzy and downright boring - oh well it is a world-famous watering hole for the wealthy for some reason. The reason for going here is to take the fantastic Bernina Express from St Moritz up to the summit at Alp Grum/Bernina Ospizo stations - to me Europe's most dramatically scenic rail trip.
