Help with Rome/Amalfi Coast Itinerary
Planning on spending two weeks and would appreciate any opinions on ideal itinerary's. We've been to Florence and Venice but never been to Rome...Here are my thoughts, 5 nights in Rome, 3 or 4 nights in either Sorronto or Positano, and 2 or 3 nights in Capri. With the last night in Rome before flying home. I've read some excellent postings, but would like help on this specific itinerary. Also, we love to drive. Any pros or cons? Thanks in advance!

Forgot to mention, we are planning on September/October 2001.

Lynne,

September and October are beautiful months to spend in that area of Italy. With this said, it is no wonder that October is Rome's busiest tourist month. You may experience brief showers during the day, but all in all mild temps. I was able to swim in the Mediteranean until the end of October, so the weather was nice. I think you scheduled plan sounds quite good. You are making a good decision to spend a couple of days in Capri. Night time is when you will enjoy it the most! The tourists that flood the street in the daytime are gone, and the city lights up! It is very romantic! Try to stay in Anacapri if you have not already made you reservations.

While in Amalfi, I would recommend visiting Ravello! It is a must! Carey

We spent 4 days in Rome, 3 in Sorrento, and then took a ferry to the island of Ischia, instead of Capri.

Ischia is a wonderful change of pace from the rest of Italy....so peaceful and scenic. You can take another ferry from Ischia to Capri. It takes about an hour.

If you love to drive, then you must take a trip down the Amalfi Coast...Sorrento to Ravello. Spend a night any where along the way. Positano is probably the most expensive.

All in all, your itinerary sounds great. I really recommend a night or two in Ischia. You'll love it.

Visit my website if you'd like to see some photos of all the places you mention in Italy...

http://www.jimtardio.com/italy.html

Lynne,

Have a wonderful trip. Itinerary sounds super. Several thoughts you may want to consider - each assume that you have a car, enjoy driving, like history and do not mind several hotels.

1. Catch Cacerta (Versailles summer house) on drive down from Rome just North of Naples).
2. Capodimonte in Naples is worthwile and parking relatively easy to find. (Driving in Naples itself is a bit nuts/parking may be difficult to find if one does not start early if you are going to the city center)
3. Amalfi Coast can be explored from Sorrento, but you 'miss' the wonder of the Coast at sunrise/sunset. You may want to consider staying on the coast for a night or so.

My wife and were in the Naples area for two weeks last Spring and enjoyed it immensely. We did a couple days in Sorrento, a couple on the coast, left the car in Positano and went to Capri for a couple of days, a couple days in Pasitea and then finished in Naples. This was kind of a big loop in a confined area. Very enjoyable.

As history buffs we took in the Greek ruins in Paestum, the volcano recovery areas of Hurculeanum and Pompeii, as well as the rich museums in Naples.

(We did our xmas shopping in the music box craft shops of Sorrento)

Have a great time.
We just got back last Sunday and had a heavenly time. We spent 3 nights in Naples (at the Hotel Santa Lucia). We took a day trip to Capri, which was wonderful. We climbed to the top and had one of our best meals at a restaurant next to the post office...the ravioli were like pillows. We spent a day walking all around Naples (museum as well) and loved the city...so much to see. On the way out of the area we went to Pompeii for a few hours. Then we spent 2 nights in Positano at Le Sirenuse (heartbreakingly beautiful, the whole experience). Then 2 nights in Amalfi at the Cappuccini Convento (different for sure but we loved it..the view is the best). We took day trips from there to Ravello and Vietri Sul Mare. On the way back to Naples we hit Serrento and then spent the night in Naples, caught our flight to Milan and then home. We really would not have changed anything about our trip.
P.S. My husband LOVED driving the Amalfi Coast..high point for him.
