When you opt for two cars, I absolutely recommend you get a pair of cheap walkie-talkies in Italy (don't bring US FRS set, which isn't legal), from around 40 euro. It's vital when travelling in convoy (to tell each other what you are doing - like stopping at the next service area or giving driving instruction or when you are cut up by other traffic or traffic lights etc). Much more convenient and cheaper than using cellphones.

Well - we both know how to drive manuals - but don;t - because in NYC traffic they are hell. And I don;t relish the idea of driving manual in a car I don;t know on roads I don;t know (it's sometimes disconcerting enough since the cars you get as rentals are so different from your own in pick up/handling etc) - that to us it's worth a few extra $.
And for someone who doesn;t know how to drive manual - finding one to learn on can be a bear.
