Help with Pompeii Logistics?

I cannot thank the denizens of this forum enough for their advice. Our honeymoon is now planned, and by a great stroke of luck and a great Amex/Air France deal, we are planning 7 nights in the Amalfi coast area for our honeymoon followed by 3 nights/2 days in Paris! (We fly direct from the US to CDG, and then direct from CDG to Naples.)

Our first 3 nights will be on Capri, then 4 nights in Positano. But I think we would like to see Pompeii at some point and I'm wondering how best to work it in.

Is it an inconvenient enough day trip from Positano that I should save it to do on our way out of the area and stay in Sorrento that last night? (Is Sorrento the closest and if so, is there easy access from Sorrento to the Naples airport?) Is it a full day of sightseeing or just a few hours? (It's not something we could see on our way from Positano to catch a 3:00 flight out of Naples, is it??)

Many, many, many thanks. (Now you'll see me posting for Paris help!!!)

Sorrento to Pompei is 35 minutes by Circumvesuviana Commuter Rail. Positano is an additional 45 minutes from Sorrento by SITA bus. Then add connection time in Sorrento. Double this time for a round-trip. Allow at least 4 to 6 hours to tour the ruins. You'll be busy the entire day! Overnighting in Sorrento shortens the journey somewhat.

We left Napoli in the morning by Circumvenusiana, stop in Pompei at 9:00 AM, hired a licenced guide(8 people max.in the group)for 3 hor tour, had lunch in outdoor restaurant (highly recommended, the original structures)and have the rest of the afternoon for Sorrento. We left the luggage at the railroad station bar/restaurant for next to norhing for the few hours. There is also a tourist office for lugagge srotage if you want. The visit is a must in my oppinion, and if the weather is good the views are unbealivable. In Positano the best hotel is Palazzo Murat with original architectural setting and furniture. Do not miss Ravello. Have fun

Daniela-

Did you make arrangements in advance for your tour of Pompeii or did you select someone when you arrived in Pompeii?
Who did you use and what was the cost?
Thanks

Hello Jennifer,

You can actually shorten the Positano-Pompei journey by going via META rather than Sorrento. This can save you 30 mins.+ in high season.

Take the Positano-Sorrento bus to META (20 mins).
Meta railway station (Circumvesuviana) is 3 mins. from the main piazza where the bus stops.

(The station isn't signposted from the piazza, - take the road downhill next to the cafe/bar. Bear left after 100m where the road forks).

Meta-Pompei is about 25 mins.

Hope this helps ...

Steve

My husband and I are leaving for Italy a week from Thursday. For the middle leg of our trip, we are going to travel by car from Gaeta (beach town south of Rome) to Sorrento. I was hoping to visit Pompeii/Herculaneum on our drive to Sorrento. Is this too much to do in one day (drive from Gaeta to Sorrento is a little over two hours)? Is it out of the way? Would it be better to do this as a day trip from Sorrento? Thanks for all your input.

You can do it in a day.

I'm a great fan of Herculaneum. It is so much more intact. You can even see charred wooden beams in the ceilings, walk inside a Roman bath on the original mosaics, etc. It's smaller, of course, but that simply means you can see all of it.

Doug

We had a car while in Praiano, but decided to take the train to Pompeii. We took the train from Meta. It was simple, fast and cheap. Round trip from Meta is under 5 Euros for two. The railway station (Pompeii Scavi stop) is right in front of the entrance to the ruins. Allow yourself enough time.
Unless you do a lot of research, I would grab a guide.

Daniela- you mentioned storing your luggage for the day. Was storage available in Pompei?
