Hi, natjgc,
why so keen on Vienna for this trip? what you have planned makes much more sense if you end in munich rather than Vienna. you could fit in your trip to Dachau [if you must] then. Salzburg, the danube, Vienna and budapest would make another great trip all by themselves. and you'd save yourselves the day you'd spend travelling to Vienna for more sightseeing. There's lots to see and do between the Mosel and Munich. [google romantic road or Romantische Strasse]. i think you now need to look at a good map and guide book. happy planning regards, ann. |
Hey Nat, Wow, looks like you have gotten some wonderful info from the Fodorites, (as usual). The post by Ann makes some sense. I know you don't want to spend all your time in Germany, but you could switch Salzburg for Vienna, and spend less time traveling and more time seeing lovely villages and visiting historical sites. Leave Vienna for another trip when you're going farther east. Unless you plan on doing research on your family namein Vienna, from what I read here and in the guide books, Salzburg will not disappoint. It's every bit as beautiful, interesting and fun as Vienna and you'll cut down on travel time. See you tonite!

I'm going to look into the areas that have been mentioned
for the Mosel valley. I really have my heart set on going to Vienna. I know Munich is closer than Vienna but I still think this is going to work out well for us. We have 9 nights on this trip and I think it will be fantastic( thanks to all of you and your expert advice). We've booked our tickets so this is really happening!! i think flying from Berlin to Worms is the way to go. I am not certain how we are going to get to Vienna yet. natjgc |
If you want to fly to Vienna from Frankfurt after your visit to the Mosel valley, I would check Air Berlin's fares at
www.airberlin.com Currently, they have €1+tax offers for that leg in July 2008 (€29 total costs). Happy travels! P.S. I live in Munich, have been in Salzburg appr. 10 times, and also some 10 times in Vienna -- and I would say that you made the right choice with Vienna. Just my very own personal biased etc. opinion :-) |
And if you want info on the Germany-Austria railpass, which if going by train could be a great deal i always refer folks to www.budgeteuropetravel.com; 800-441-2387 as IME they are experts and one of the rare places where you can talk to someone very knowledgeable to discuss the train aspect. Not sold in europe but check www.bahn.de and www.oebb.at for actual fares to compare.

Thankd for the info om Air Berlin. I think I'll check this airline out, the price looks very good and since you live in Germany I know you have all the right information. As far as Vienna versus Salzberg-- well they both look amazing but since I have family roots in Vienna, I have some connection to the area and I want to be there. I'm not even sure that i will be able to persue the family thing but I still want to go and besides, it looks beautiful and I like asthetics. PalenQ. Thanks for the website on trains... that also an option. This is great for us to have Fodors and what it has to offer. Thanks, Any ideas on where to stay in Vienna??? natjgc |
Hello,
Our trip to Germany is really taking shape. Thanks for all of your help. We want to stay in Worms for one night and then rent a car in Frankfort and drive along the Romantic road leasurely and arrive in Munich and spend 2 nights there. Could anyone reccommend a nice hotel in Worms that MIGHT have airconditioning? It is more important though for us to have the hotel centrally located so that is more of a priority for us than Ac. Also how far is Ludwig's castle from Munich? I assume it is a day trip. natjgc |
you may want to stop by fussen qnd mad ludwigs most famous castle before going to munich about 2 hours southwest of munich
|
that's a good idea.. thanks,
i think though that we are going to spend the night in Rothenberg and leave the next morning for Ludwig's castle and then Munich, thanks for your input. natjgc |
If trying to sandwich fussen and its castles into the same day Rotenburg-Fussen-Munich then by all means make an online reservation for Neuschwanstein or else if you just arrive you may have to wait hours to get in sans reservations
i was there once on a weekday in November and lines were long - many American GIs based in area and many in line were GIs showing family around. |
