Help with One Day layover in Frankfurt
On our way back from Israel we needed to stay overnight in Frankfurt in order to get our first class mileage seats on Luftansia. We arrive about 12:00 and leave the next day about 11:30. Can anyone give me a suggestion for a hotel relatively close to the airport, and maybe something we can see and do that afternoon. Also someplace for dinner. We will not have enought time for a city tour I do not think, plus maybe we are better off just picking one important thing to do.
We were in Berlin a few years ago so have a slight taste of Germany. By the way we are leaving this Saturday, and the first class seats just opened up making this layover necessary. |
Can't help with dinner or sightseeing suggestions -but there is a very nice Sheraton attached to the airport (in the domestic terminal) that I have used in the past. Quite convenient.

I think Mainz is a more pleasant short stopover than Frankfurt. It is right on the S-bahn line from the airport.
Mainz has a nice Altstadt and Romanesque cathedral plus a church with Chagall stained glass windows, the Gutenberg museum, other museums. There are several hotels along the Rhine. You can do a search for Mainz to get specific recommendations |
Since we will have luggage with us we will not be taking the train from the airport. How far is Mainz from the airport by taxi? If we land about 12:00 and have to go through customs, get a taxi, get to to the hotel, check in, how much actual time will we have to do anything?
Would we be better off staying at the airport and then taking the train someplace where we can walk around, a little sightseeing, have dinner, and then take the train back to the hotel? |
Unless you have limited and smaller pieces of luggage that you can easily handle, I would opt for staying at the airport hotel and taking the train out somewhere. The Sheraton is convenient but so expensive. Last year we did stay there and felt spending the money would be worth walking into the airport only to find for our airline we had to take the shuttle--think we were on Delta. Someone on this site recommended www.hotels.de to check for Frankfurt airport hotels. We are flying from there in Sept and I have been checking it out but have not made reservations yet. Have a good trip.

Try the Hotel Mercure, they have a shuttle service and they offer dining, bar, internet and so on.

I am posting again as I still need some help. Hotel rooms appear to be quite expensive and if I use priceline in the **** category I get several choices that may come up.
These are my questions. 1.Is the Inter contential to far away? 2. Is Mainz to far from the airport also. The only one coming up is the sheraton and they are about $350.00 per night which we would rather not do. OUr hope was to take a shuttle to a hotel, drop our stuff and head to a train station and go someplace for the afternoon, evening and dinner.. Help Help Please. |
First of all:
What about checking your big bags through and just taking small bags for the overnight stay? Or leaving your big bags at the airport? If you are flying first class, everything will be possible. Second, decide whether you go to Mainz or Frankfurt. Both towns are close. The train takes 12 min to Frankfurt and 17 min to Mainz. The train station is practically within the airport, so you can take your baggage carts. Frankfurt is not a bad choice for a half day. It has excellent museums, a small but quaint old town (the "Römer"), beautiful riverbanks and vibrant nightlife with all sorts of restaurants and bars. www.frankfurt.de Mainz is also beautiful, but smaller and quieter. It is a matter of taste where you stay. I would not recommend staying in an airport hotel. You will be faster from a downtown hotel either in Frankfurt or in Mainz than from a socalled airport hotel with a shuttle that leaves every hour and takes 15 minutes. Third, for hotel search use www.hrs.de. They are convenient to use and have good rates. |
violet duck: Very good suggestions and what I was looking for. I would like to leave the majority of the luggage at the airport if I can and just take one overnight case with us.I will check on leaving our bags and either having them sent on ahead of us which would be fine or at least checking then at the airport, I think the sugggestions to go into the Frankfurt area,We would like to get to at least ibe musuenm people watch and have a nice dinner,I will check this websites in the morning as it is already 3:30 am and I cnnot sleep or type,

The easiest thing you can do, is deposit your luggage at the airport right on arrival, and take with you just a small overnight bag. They do have lockers and left luggage facilities: http://www.travel-library.com/airpor...t_airport.html
Hope you'll enjoy your restaurants in Jerusalem ;-) |
You probably won't be able to check your luggage through with that long of a layover. But I agree, lockers or left luggage would be a great idea, just take an overnight case and go to a smaller town like Mainz for the night on the train.

I just wanted to get back to all of you regarding the layover in Frankfurt.
1. There is a 24 hour rule for checking luggage all the way through to your destination and we had a 23 hour layover. We were able to check our bags from Tel Aviv all the way through to Los Angeles and they arrived with us; amazing, 2. Hotel - We decided we wanted to be near the airport since we were being picked up in Tel Aviv at 3:00am for our 7:00am flight. We felt we could decide when you got the Frankfurt how much energy we had for running around. As it turned out , not much. I chose the Steigenberger Airport Hotel from Hotels.com because it was a 5* and close to the aiport. It was great. We paid about $250.00 for one night US which was pretty reasonable. The hotel was beautiful, the beds were perfect, and we ended up have dinner at their gourmet restaurant, called FACES which was exceptional. It was a fitting end to a wonderful trip. |

spiegelcjs-glad you had a wonderful trip. I have made reservations at the Intercity Hotel at Frankfurt Airport, but may consider changing to Steigenberger.I think Intercity is owned by same company, but Steigenberger is more upscale,I
believe. |
