We are staying one night at the Hotel Spitzeg in Rothenberg and then want to spend two or three nights in the wine area near Wurtsburg. We then go to Brugge for a family event. Is Iphofen the best place to stay? Which hotels are good?

Any help would be much appreciated to complete the last bit of our trip.We have not though booked accomodation in the Black Forest or between Salzburg as we thought it would be easy to find somewhere.

Thanks again

hi joan,

you should have no trouble getting in somewhere in the black forest that time of year. every little town/village has its "zimmer frei" signs. when we stopped at titisee [stop tittering at the back there, DS] we found a lovely B & B just off the main street within about 10 minutes of arrival.

that said we liked the following hotel, just for the name:

hotel Seehof am See.

just in case you didn't get where it was. [good ranking on TA too!].

remember that in Germany, they charge per person, NOT per room, at least in B & B. that can make places more expensive than you'd thought at first.

regards, ann

joandg, we loved Iphofen. We based ourselves there for 3 nights at the wonderful Gasthof Zum Hirschen. We really enjoyed our stay and found the hotel to be a great value.

Iphofen is small, but has some great medievel fortifications including this one, which is one of my absolute favorites:

We took some lovely walks around the old walls and did a day trip to nearby Dettelbach, another lovely little wine town near Wurzburg as well as Karlstadt am Main. You can see photos of these towns in the same album above.

joandg,

I was looking at your post this morning and wanted to tell you that my husband and I were in Rothenburg 1 night enroute to Munich. We did the Night Watchman's tour and found it fasinating and well worth it. However we stayed at the Roter
Hahn and were very disappointed.
The pictures on the net looked great and we were looking forward to staying there but found the place and the room very run down. The staff was lovely and the owner was very accommodating but I feel there are other places to stay that would be nicer. That is my opinion.
natjgc PS: bring warm clothing!!

Dear Jo,

You are traveling to some really wonderful places. I think you will be very pleasantly surprised by your trip! Do get excited!

In Munchen I can recommend the Restaurant Hofer just beyond the wonderful Dallmayr and Brot & Butter food halls for really good Bavarian food and beer.

You can also get a wonderful Milch Kaffee and Bundt cake at Brot and Butter or some dark bread with quark. Stop in Dallmayr just to look and get your mouth watering - wonderful! All are just a block beyond Marienplatz headed toward Residenz on the right side of the street.

Try to have breakfast at the Hotel Sacher in Salzburg if it's not too expensive. It is absolutely the best hotel breakfast I've ever had and in a lovely setting and I promise you won't need lunch that day.

Have a great trip.

If the weather is cool you can buy a great boiled wool jacket - great in dry or rainy weather and last forever. I recommend Geiger. I've had one for 20 years. Just bought a new one last year.

Hi,
Sounds great and have a wonderful time! While in Rothenburg, do go on the Nightwatchman's tour. Meet in the main square at 8pm. No tickets or reservations, just show up. We were in Rothenburg last October and this was simply the best hour we spent there!

gruezi,pja1,jgg,

Thanks for your good wishes and further advice especially about the restaurants in Munich. We will do the night watchman's tour in Rothenburg.

I last bought a boiled wool jacket in Canada about 10years ago, very nice and warm. They are very expensive here in England, may be cheaper in Germany or Austria.

We leave tomorrow morning so hope the English Channel will be calm. It's been very windy here the last few days and the port workers have been on strike in France!

Will write a trip report when we return.

Thanks again for so much good advice.

Regards

Jo

In Salzburg I stayed at the Goldener Hirsch on the main pedestrian shopping street (Getiedgesrasse--probably not spelled correctly) in the old town. It was pricey 10 years ago but lovely Austrian country style decor and fabulous location. If I remember we must have had a relatively good off-season rate as we traveled in late October.

Spelling of the street was WAY off--it's Getreidegasse

Many reviews in TripAdvisor

There are 2 small villages along the Main about 45 minutes from Wurzburg.
I stayed in Sommerach for three months in 2004 and I would bike to Volkach each day for lunch.

I rarely see any reviews from Sommerach or Volkach on Fodors. I liked both towns alot. It would be a great place to stay for a few nights.

Sorry about the delay in posting a report on our trip but I've been busy catching up and had a horrible chest infection.Unfortunately I will not be able to give you all the names of some great restaurants as my partner has thrown away all the receipts I carefully kept.

We spent our first night at a chambre d'hotes at Arry near Nancy. A restaurant with rooms. The restaurant was closed but we ate a delicious pre ordered dinner at a cost of 35 Euros including wine in the breakfast room. The B&B was very quirky but good value at 60 Euros.Breakfast was basic.

The next day we drove into Germany and into the Black Forest through some wonderful scenery. We had not booked the next two nights but found a hotel in Titisee. The Sonneneck was not very special but was central and with parking. Breakfast was good dinner at two local restaurants was very disappointing.Titisee was very touristy during the day but deserted at night. The scenery in the area is wonderful and we enjoyed the Todtnauer Waterfall and the village of Todtnau.

Our next stop was Meersburg on Lake Constance were we stayed at the wonderful Gasthof zum Barren, thank you bettyk for the recommendation. We had a brilliant two nights, comfortable room, good bathroom, very good breakfast and two excellent dinners. We met some delightful people at the shared tables. The owner and staff provide a high level of service and the garage parking in this medieval town is a bonus.Lots to do and see in the area. We toured the town and went on the ferry to Konstanz and if you like gardens the island of Mainau is well worth a visit and Wasserburg is pretty.

Next it was Munich.....
