We are planning a trip to southern Italy this fall (sept/oct)
We're arriving in Rome early morning (got great deal on airfare)
Thinking of taking the train to Naples and spending the first night there.
Then hiring a private guide to take us to Pompeii and on to Sorrento for the night.
From there to Capri and then to Positano.
How many nights should we spend in each place?
Is there any place we should skip to give us more nights elsewhere?

I would spend as many nights as possible in Positano. From there, the other towns along the coast, including Capri, are easily accessible by ferry.

You've already gotten a lot of advice on the many different threads you have already posted, so I'm not sure what more input you want. The problem is that it ultimately depends on YOUR interests and preferences, so NONE of us can tell you how to plan your trip. If you haven't already done so, I recommend that you get some good guidebooks (or spend some time with a few in your local library), identify the things you most want to see in each location, check their opening/closing times on the internet, and mark them on a calendar. Then pencil in your transportation (use rome2rio.com to identify your options), add some time on either side (for getting to/from your lodging, checking in/out, packing/unpacking, getting oriented, etc.). Then see how things fit together. That's really the only way for you to decide what works for you.

You should get to booking your hotel for Positano ASAP. September is still high season and many places book up a year in advance in this internet age.

I just booked a room on the coast for five nights for our trip in August of 2017 and I'm glad I did since the hotel only has 20 rooms and some of them are already gone. If the place doesn't have on-line booking or it says it is full then email them just in case or see if one of the booking engines still has some alloted rooms.
