We are comparing hotels:

- Egerton
- Royal Park
- Horseguards (River View)
- Marriott County Hall (River View)
- Cranley
- Hazlitt's
- Goring
- Covent
- Cadogen
- Knightsbridge

We like a higher quality hotel that is near to sights, but (if possible) quietly located for a good night's sleep. We like traditional/classic decor, good service and rooms that are well cared for and rejuvenated when needed. Can anyone compare those listed (or make other recommendations)? What would your top picks be?

Well the Middleton stayed at the Goring when Kate and Wills married. If it's good enough for the royals I guess it would suit!There are several hotels with Cranley in their names Which are you speaking of?

I assume you mean the Egerton <i>House</i>

I would be 100% happy to stay in any of those (if they were in my pay grade ) EXCEPT the Royal Park. It is in Lancaster Gate/Paddington and for that sort of £££ I'd want a better/more convenient/posher area.

When we went last year, I was looking at Hazlitt's, but in the end opted for The Montague Hotel. The main reason was the location; it is next door to the British Museum, which was my main reason for going to London. It meets all of your requirements. We walked to the theater, to the British Library, to several small cafes and there were Tube stations for access to places like the Tower of London. We did get upgraded to a small suite. I think if you want absolute quiet, you could ask for a room on the park instead of the street, although we didn't find the street noisy. Highly recommend.

I think we checked out the rooms at the Montegue - if I remember, they felt a bit more contemporary but I will check again as the location sounds good.

Sorry about the Cranley - the one we listed above is at http://www.cranleyhotel.com/locations.html. Looks similar (inside) to the Royal Park - I think they may have been affiliated in the past.

Royal Park does look a bit out of things on the map, but a little bit out of the way is good if it means some peace and quiet - we're not sure how much noise we would have there (though this is London - it may be loud everywhere at night...).

Are there any you would knock of the list besides the Royal Park?
Which would be your top three picks out of the list and why?

Could be - but not in this case.

In any case, all of the hotels you mention are quite upscale and all will have quiet rooms. Any of the others would be absolutely fine. Pick one.

Be sure you are looking at the "<i>Montague on the Gardens</i>". It is on the traditional side - w/ some updated/contemporary bits.

A much neater, shorter list - we dropped Royal Park based on the good advice from JanisJ re: location. Any further comments comparing the four above? Quite a difference in price between the first and last two, all based on location I am sure as Covent and Goring are well located.

We've whittled our selections down:

- 1st stay London: Goring, Royal Park (they are just so nice there), or Royal Horseguards
- 2nd stay London & trip finale: Marriott County Hall (or the Horseguards)
