Help with Livorno -- Not Florence, Pisa or Siena!
Hi all -- My husband and I have one day in Livorno on Aug 4 as part of a cruise. I've read that Livorno isn't very nice so I'm looking for something to do. Unfortunately (or fortunately!), we've already been to many of the cities the excursions go to (Florence, Pisa, Siena, Lucca, all over Chianti, etc.) and don't want to return to them on this trip. We also don't want to spend a lot of time in a car or being transported. Any suggestions for things to do near or in Livorno? FYI -- We would love to visit a vineyard(s). Thanks!

Hi bt,

How many times have you been there that you are tired of them?
You can be in the Cinque Terre in about 2 hr via La Spezia.

You may have already been to them but San Gimignano and Volterra are easy trips from Livorno if you have a car (or are hiring a driver for the day). If you have been to those towns, I loved the small, undiscovered hilltowns of Lajatico, Orciatico and Montecatini val di Cecina west of Volterra. I'm sure they are going to feed you well on the cruise, but two of my favorite restaurants in Italy are an option for a long, leisurely lunch--Da Gennarino in Livorno and Romano in Viareggio.

grinisia,
I topped up a post from a poster named Marzi looking for info about that area. Maybe you could help.
bostontraveler,
I don't blame you bostontraveler for wanting to see more of Italy. I've never been to Volterra but I hear it's fantastic. Some other places near Livorno I've always wanted to go are Massa Marittima and Populonia. Maybe you could hire a driver and do a loop: Volterra, Massa Marittima and Populonia.

Livorno is not horrendous, it is actually nice. The very fact that it is oft-overlooked by tourists makes it a nice option compared to the typically-visited Tuscan towns. There are some nice ristorantes around the Piazza Cavour area, as well as some good seafood places near the wharf/harbor.
Just outside of Livorno, you can see the seaside resort of "Il Terrenia" which is actually on a bus line between Pisa and Livorno (15 mins away). Also, a visit to Viareggio (another Italian seaside resort town) is only 35 +/- minutes away. Have you seen Carrara - the marble area in Tuscany? That would make an interesting day trip as well.
