Help with itinerary for driving trip in Northern Norway
 

Please help with planning a driving trip in Northern Norway in May/June 2015. We have three weeks or more for the trip.

In 2011 we did a two week driving trip from Stockholm to Oslo, Lillehammer, Alesund, Briksdalbreen Balestrand, Bergen, Balestrand, ferry to Hanstholm, to Æro, then drove to Copenhagen to fly home. We loved the trip, especially the parts in Norway. This time we would like to see parts of Norway that are north of Alesund, all the way to NordKapp if possible.

Since we are quite a bit older now in our (mid/late 60’s) and did all the glacier climbing in 2011 and later in New Zealand, we don’t plan on doing any of that. Viewing is still good though. Mild hiking daily is good, no more than 10k.

Our current general plan is to fly from LAX to Tromso, rent a car, travel around, and fly out of Alesund back to LAX.

Two options on arriving in Tromso.
Option1: Fly in to Tromso, pick up our car, spend one night, get on the Hurtigruten to Honningsvag ferry with the car, then start driving South from Honningsvag. Maybe spend a night nearby.
Option2: Is the Hurtigruten experience worth it? Shall we just drive from Tromso to Nordkapp and back down? I thought we could use the Hurtigruten to decompress from the long flight.

Then drive the length of the Lofoten all the way to Å. Take the ferry to Bodo.

Drive south … eventually make it to Alesund. Spend a few days there before heading home.

Would prefer not to drive more than 200 miles a day. We stayed at a really nice hotel in Alesund, Brosundet Gjestehus Hotel, we would like to stay there again. But other hotel recommendations in other areas are appreciated.

We loved the Norangsdalen valley, especially the milk maid’s cabin. So we are thinking about using Alesund as a base and visit there. And maybe revisit Geiranger too.

There are a lot of holes in my itinerary, I would like suggestions to fill up the gaps.
