help with itinerary - first trip 2 weeks only

There's so much to choose from and we want to see everything. Four friends arriving in Roma. our wish list includes Venice, Firenza, Siena, Cinque Terra, other Tuscan stops and Amalfi. Is this too ambitious?

They are all solid destinations, but yes, your wish list is too much for a two-week trip. I'd save at least one, possibly two, for another trip. It's a tough choice, but I'd drop Amalfi and Cinque Terre this time. Rome, Florence, Siena and other Tuscany towns and Venice will make for a great 2-week trip.....and you still won't see and do everything in those places!

It's really too much for 2 weeks. Are you including travel time in that 2 weeks? If so, then you really have 12 days.

You've mentioned 6 different destinations, not including the vague Tuscan stops. That means a new town every 2 days. As an example, it's about a half day to get from Rome to Amalfi and then another half day back to Rome for your next destination. So you'd have 1 day in Amalfi. And 2 days isn't enough in any of the cities.

I'd either do Rome, Florence, and Venice OR Rome, Florence and some small Tuscan towns.

For Rome, Florence, and Venice you don't need a rental car. Take the trains. It's very easy.

You could also take the train between Rome and Florence and pick up a rental car as you leave Florence to explore other towns. Siena can be easily done as a day trip via bus from Florence.

Where are you flying into and leaving from?

Hi sond,

For 2 weeks I suggest either

1. Florence and Tuscany, and Venice

2. Rome, Naples and the Amalfi Coast

3. Rome, Umbria and the CT

You didn't say when you were planning to go but, for a first trip, I would choose Rome, Florence and Venice. If you have 2 weeks and can include the weekends at either end, you could do Rome for 4 days, Florence for 3 days, 2 days in the Tuscan countryside (including Siena) and 4 days in Venice. We did that trip several years ago and it worked out well. CT and the Amalfi Coast are wonderful but I would save them for a later trip. Once you have been to Italy, you will return!
