Help with itenerary in Croatia in August

I have really enjoyed reading about everyone's experiences in Croatia and would like some advice from you well-seasoned travelers! I desperately need assistance planning my bar-trip in August with my husband and parents-in-law.

Initially we thought we'd fly from Houston to Venice, and then ferry to Istria, spend some time hopping from town to town, then bus it to Veszprem, Hungary and then fly out of Budapest. With all of the talk of Dubrovnik, though, I don't want to miss Southern Croatia and can nix Venice, if necessary.

My only trip "need" is to meet some friends in Veszprem, Hungary from my exchange student days, and, as such, I would like to spend a good 4 days in Hungary total. This will leave only about 8 for Croatia!

Other questions include: Can we be flexible in early August with 4 people, or do we need to book everything and fully plan ahead of time? Is there a place we can "base" and from which we can then make day trips easily? Does anyone know if it is easy to get to Veszprem via either bus or train from Croatia? Should we consider air travel to cut out time?

Thanks in advance!

oops, "itinerary...."

That's a lot of territory, IMHO. Hungary is quite a ways from the Croatian coast. You might want to check the Die Bahn web site for train timetables-that might give you some idea of travel lengths. You can plug in any town and get train connections and times.
Croatia is deceptively big, too. We ended up getting a one-way flight from Dubrovnik to Zagreb at the end of our trip. Otherwise the trip would have taken up an entire day, almost.
We rode buses, ferries, trains and planes, and rented a car, all on a 10-day trip Venice-Dubrovnik. Great trip, but it does take a lot of planning. Good luck!

Thanks, Steff. I think we are going to fly into Dubrovnik and fly from Split to Budapest to cut out trip time between places.

Which were your favorite places in Croatia? Any suggestions on places to stay?

Discovered Croatia 3 years ago and just loved it. So far my favorite place is Trogir with Split running second but I am sure that will change this summer when I go to Dubrovnik and island hop all the way to Zadar. Hvar and Makarska are supposed to be beautiful too. Can't wait. Hope you enjoy Croatia too.

Dubrovnik, obviously. We really loved Hvar and Rovinj. Korcula was fun too,a s were Pula and Split. You can't go wrong!

To go from Budapest to Dubrovnik You can try Sky Europe, a low coast airline will operate on summer, also MALEV will service hungarian capital to Dubrovnik same time.

Thanks, everyone.

I think we are settled on Dubrovnik for 3 days, then Korcula for 3 days, then Trogir/Split for 1 night/1 day, then we'll fly out to Budapest.

Any suggestions on places to stay in Korcula? My husband wants to be away from the crowds while we are there.
