Help with Italy Transportation Please!!!
 

I just can't seem to figure this out!!! :-(

If it's easy and you can help...

I arrive by Train into Venice (Station: Venezia S Lucia) on the 25th of September at 15:38. From there, I need to get to either the Sant'Angelo or San Samuele stop. How do I do this "exactly"? I'm open to boat or bus.

I'd love "mapquest" type directions (walk here turn here, take this steet, this boat).

I'm so afraid I'm going to get lost!

The same for Rome. I arrive by train on the 29th (Station: Roma Termini) at 15:05. From there I need to get to Bus Stop: Largo Tassoni.

I've looked at www.actv.it as well as www.atvo.it... and I still can't make heads or tails of it.

I can help you with Rome:
From Termini Railway Station take bus 78N (that goes up to Piazzale Clodio) from Piazza dei Cinquecento (which is right outside the station, there are lots of yellow-orange buses, you can't miss them). Get off at Zanardelli bus stop (it is 10 stops from Termini) and from there you must walk for about 5-10 minutes.
Largo Tassoni is between Piazza Navona and Ponte Umberto (near the Tiber).
If you don't know where to get off, stay near the driver and tell him that you must get off at Zanardelli stop, he will tell you when it is time to get off.

Another question, I went to Mappy.com and printed out both walking and driving directions (before reading your helpful reply :-) It said 4 miles by car, 12 minutes. Would it make sense to try and take a taxi? (I'm traveling alone)... or is the bus easy enough?

Every vaporetto stop has a map of the stops. If in doubt, #1 stops at all.

The &quot;bus&quot; IS a <i>boat</i> (a vaporetto). You can't miss the vaporetto stop, right in front of the train station. I think you take either 1 or 82 (either might work - - telling you this from memory); it's all very clearly marked - - like reading a subway map. It erally is easy as can be. Thousands of visitors to Venice encounter it for the first time ever daily, and figure it out with no problem at all.

You do need to figure out if you want a one ride ticket, a one day ticket, a three day ticket - - or a fine (potentially), if you decide to forego
the ticket (since it's pretty much all honor system anyway).

In Rome, you really might want to take a taxi. Since it seems that you must walk for 5 or 10 minutes after getting off the bus, and you are totally unfamiliar with the area, well, if it were me, I would take a taxi. It won't be that much.

And the vaparetto won't be a problem in Venice. Your stop will be very easy to figure out.

If you do get lost in Venice, at any time, remember that all visitors do; it is part of the fun of Venice.

Yes I agree, I would take a taxi in Rome, if I were you. Especially if you don't know the area and I suppose you will have some baggage with you (buses tend to be crowded, plus you must pay attention to pickpockets, plus you must walk from the bus stop to the final point). Get a map as soon as you get to Venice and Rome, you will see that it is easier than you expect to move around these 2 cities.

I'm not familiar with your full itinerary, but if you're in Venice for two or more days, I suggest you buy a three day pass for the vaparettos -- at a cost of 22 euro. It is actually good for 72 hours, so if you buy it late on the 25th (say at 16:00) it will be good until that same time on the 28th. It's good even for the boats out to Lido, Murano, Burano, etc. Just hop on them at will. It's always great when you just don't want to walk anymore, as well as for just getting from point A to point B.

Patrick is absolutely right, especially since 1 ticket costs 5 euro and a suitcase is another 3 euro. I think, like the 24 hour pass, you can take your luggage without additional charge, always a plus.

More information on Venezia vaporettos. Use the #1 boat for Sant' Angelo and #82 for San Samuele, both stops are about a block apart..Both #1 and #82 are at the Ferrovia stop.

Caution. You will be offered a taxi as you arrive in Rome Termini as you come off the train. Don't accept; they are not authorised taxis and will cheat you. Take a taxi only from the taxi rank outside the south side of the station.
