Help with Italy Itinerary - I think I'm doing too much..

Since I love to plan early (and often), I'm planning for Italy for next summer (late June through early July) with DH and DD. I've sketched out an itinerary, but I think it may be too much, so I'd love some feedback.

We do like to just get in a car and roam - in Wales last summer, we spent every night in a different town, and we liked that, so that may give you some insight into our travelling style.

Here's what I was thinking:

Day 1- Arrive Rome
Day 2 – Rome
Day 3 – Rome
Day 4 – Rome
Day 5 – Rent car – drive to Praiano
Day 6 – Stay in Praiano and toodle around the Amalfi Coast
Day 7 – See Pompeii – Drive North – Stay in Calitri (or somewhere out that way)
Day 8 – Drive North – Stay in Terni (or somewhere out that way)
Day 9 – Keep heading north - stay somewhere in Tuscany
Day 10 – Stay in Cinque Terre
Day 11 – Stay in Cinque Terre
Day 12 – Drive to Venice and drop off car
Day 13 – Venice
Day 14 - Venice
Day 15 – Venice
Day 16 - Departure

Any comments would be appreciated - I think the Amalfi Coast segment is tripping me up, but I really want to see that, and I can't actually be sure I'll ever get back..

Thanks!

Given your "traveling style", I think your itinerary is fine.

But why Calitri?

No other reason than it seemed like a reasonable distance out in the middle of nowhere that we could get to if we spent a big part of the day in Pompeii - and I found a cool looking place to stay there.

I think your itinerary is good.

I do not favor Rome at the beginning, but staying too few days amplifies the difficulties faced by those who find Rome awfully INTENSE.

Five days will be good, and you'll quickly love it.

Best wishes,

Rex

With 14 nites in Italy and the primary destinations you have,I would stay at 4 destinations only. I have no idea what those midddle days are all about. You only need one destination for those 3 nites--perhaps Orvieto or Todi.

Actually, if you are like us, and we enjoy driving, your itinerary looks great.

Hi Seasweetie, i'm Lorenzo from Rome.
I'm sorry for my bad english, but well..be prepared, nobody speaks a good english in italy, oops! June-july is great period to visit Italy although could be very hot. I can understand your wishes to see as much as possible but you'll appreciate to spend some days in Praiano,Positano or Amalfi coast (or Capri/Ischia Island?? just 30 minutes by hydrofoil from Sorrento) having some sunbath and swim! After that I want to say that Campania Region is really difficult to travel... maybe the worst italian driver! Crowd and traffic, so go fastly north.

well, now more than Umbria region you can spend 2 nights in Pienza, Tuscany, biking and very good eating! well 4 hours by car from sorrento, but you are now close to Cinque Terre..3 hours by car.

Passing trough Montalcino please have a glass of wine! and spend an hour in Monteriggioni, you'll love it!

OK now you are in Riomaggiore, where you can spend your time hiking the Cinque Terre Trail.
eating famous Recco's focaccia (white pizza)and spaghetti al pesto.

From Cinque terre to Venice, have a stop in Mantova.

I hope to has been clear.
have a good trip. Lorenzo
