Help with Ireland Itinerary
 

Hi - we are thinking of going to ireland this summer. No plans yet. Only know that we want to stop in Dublin to visit my father's family.

Any recommendations on itinerary for approx. 7 nights.

We visited dublin last year and toured the south east of ireland. had a great time in wexford, lovely beaches and restaurants. checkout www.wexfordweb.com stayed at a nice guest house in dublin in ballsbridge. (cant remember name, but nice places in the area) stayed in ballygarran house in wexford and dunbrody house in new ross. previous time to ireland we went from rosslare to cork (nice coastal drive via dungarvin, youghal. west cork and kerry were lovely , we visited baltimore and went on to stay in dingle. dingle has great pubs with traditional music and lovely rugged scenery. hope this info is of some use to you.

Do you intend to hire a car and travel about, use public transport to get around or stay in Dublin and day trip?

We like to tour significant sights, enjoy any local "flavor", appreciate beautiful scenery.

Planned on renting a car as I thought we might need to in order to view the countryside.

Since you may be visiting family, you could combine your visit with them with some one day sightseeing of Powerscourt Gardens, Glenalough, and the Wicklow Gap. In the other direction Howth may be interesting.

I'd say the best way to experience Ireland is to give yourself one week for a quarter of the country (SW, SE, NW, NE). I wouldn't recommend trying to do the SW and SE in one trip...you'll be zipping from one site to the next.

Since you are flying in to Dublin and spending some time with family, the SW is probably your best bet. For some significant sites, consider Glendalough, Powerscourt and some of the coast. I'd also include Cashel, Cahir and maybe Kilkenny (and/or Waterford Crystal if there is a crystal lover in the group).

I second the Wicklow mountain area (having just returned from Switzerland, these are really just hills; the Irish aren't fooling me) and Powerscourt Gardens.

Outside Dublin on the north there are some blockbuster sights as well. The little town of Trim has a fantastic castle, as seen in Braveheart. The Newgrange area has some druidic buildings that do neat calendrical things on the solstices. Check with Dublin TIs; there are companies that organize day-trip tours to these places. Very worthwhile.
