To appreciate Vienna I think you really have to bone up on history. Have been there twice and was not bored either time. I think a daytrip to Melk might be interesting.... if you do your homework.
(PS... had the best weiner schnitzel I've ever had at the Marriott!!)
(PPS... Forget Sacher torte... don't even waste your time reading the extensive thread here.)

Who said they couldn't even find a classical music station?
Poppycock!

Try Radio Stephansdom 107.3 FM.
Also on the web...

I loved Vienna! Only had 3 (partial) days and 2 nights there. Heading back for a week next spring. We stayed at Pension Pertschy...great location, price was 120E (in Oct 2002) for a very large twin room, with breakfast included. We're staying in a 2BR apt this time. Eva Maria Lauer at http://www.apartment.at/index_eng.php3.

We wanted to be in the city center again.

Enjoy your trip!

If you love architecture and history, Vienna is a necessity to visit. Not for the overwhelming beauty but for the juxtaposition of the regal architecture of the Austro-hungarian empire with the architecture of the Jugenstil or Art Nouveau. The time we spent at the Kunsthistorische museum was divided between being overwhelmed by the Rubens exhibit and staring at the elaborate imterior with every inch covered in designs. At the MAK museum we studied the exhibit material on the Werkstate which was an attempt to provide a comprehensive and inclusive approach to all aspectsof residential architecture and design--very much the same approach Frank Lloyd Wright took with his work.
Vienna is a joy and should not be missed. The unfortunate devastation of the Russian liberation of Vienna is reflected in the local saying that Vienna could survive another war but not another liberation. This left room for the 1950's building of unremarkable sites.

Vienna is beautiful! I stayed around the opera house. It was walking distance to everything, also the city bus tours pick you up in front of the opera house.

I agree with the other positive posts, I just wanted to add, one day we took a day trip to Salzburg. We picked it up at our hotel, it was worth it. Who could resist landscapes from the Sound of Music. We are not bus people, I forced my husband, and he has thanked me ever since. It was his favorite city in Austria.

Read Fodors Vienna, they will hook you up with some great people watching coffee houses, cheap opera tickets, etc.

Southern Germany was another favorite place. We drove the romantic road and visited the castles, etc. Loved Munich!

If you need more details about southern Germany let me know, I was there in May, I can get back to you after Aug.
8. I am leaving Monday for Paris.

Thanks for the help, I am going to plan 2 days in Salzburg because everyone has told me how incredible it is!

My flight leaves from Munich after my 3 or 4 days in Vienna, so I will have one day to tour Munich. What do you suggest I not miss?

Amusez-vous bien en France!
