Help with Hotel in Interlaken, Switzerland
 

Hi!
We're going to be staying in Interlaken for three nights and need a recommendation on a hotel. Our choices are between the Hotel Bellevue, Hotel Metropole, and the Victoria-Jangfrau. If you have stayed in any of these we would sure appreciate any feedback. Thank you in advance!

Jim: I have only visited Interlaken for a day, so I don't know much about accommodations, but I am reseaching our next trip and have some info. I don't know about the Bellevue. The Metropole is supposed to be nice, but it's considered "the ugliest building in town". The Victoria Jungfrau is a five star with 400 rooms, swimming pool and very nice. I guess that it's the best in town besides the Grand Hotel Beau Rivage (top class, excellent views). The town is quite beautiful. Have a good trip!

Jim, The Victoria-Jungfrau is the best, but why do
you want to pay $300+ for a big hotel. There are
many hotels in this town---my favorite is the Krebs,
much smaller and more authentic---a 4 star for
about $160. Frankly, I would prefer to stay in
Wengen or Grindelwald and merely visit Interlaken
as you catch the train going or coming. You can see
this town in an hour----it would take a week to
exhaust the pleasures of the surrounding scenery.

We spent a week in the Metropole while attending a convention and other members of our party stayed at the Victoria-Jungfrau and Bellevue. The Metropole is indeed an ugly building but also the tallest. If you can get a room on a top floor, facing the main street, there is a fantastic view. The Victoria is a world class turn-of-the-century place with a wonderful dining room. As mentioned above it is quite expensive as is the restaurant. The Bellevue is good but location of your room is probably important - maybe another reader can help. We spent over seven years in Europe and Interlaken is one of our favorite places.

Hello - We've stayed at the Hotel Bellevue several times. It's right on the river, and we always ask for room with a view. Of course the views there are incredible anyplace. It's reasonably priced,older but nice, quaint, charming (and all the usual adjectives for Switzerland!). Friends have stayed at the Victoria, nice but very expensive. You're not going to spend that much time in the room wherever you go so the most expensive isn't really necessary. Older or cheaper places may not have private baths so always ask about that if it's important to you not to have to go down the hall. Have a great time.

One of my favorite places is Hotel Weisses Kreuz in Interlaken. You can reach them through the Interlaken home page. Be sure to take the Grindelwald/Lauterbrennen/Jungfrau train for a day trip.

While the Victoria-Jungfrau is the most well-known, and the most expensive, hotel in Interlaken, it is in the busiest part of town. The Beau-Rivage is also a luxury hotel, but it is more removed from the traffic and the noise. Interlaken is very busy, so unelss you have to stay there, I would recommend staying on one of the surrounding villages. Grindelwald is wonderful because it puts you right up there with the mountains, and there are some wonderful places to stay there. But we stayed in Spietz, a little town on Lake Thun, at the Strandhotel Belvedere, It was beautiful and quiet -- but you'll need a car. Regardless of where you stay, you will be in the most beautiful place on earth. Enjoy it!
