Help with Greece Trip 9/08

All trying to plan a first time trip to Greece in Sept and so confused with what to do. We have booked our flights in and out of Athens and have 9 nights total. Arrive into Athens at approximately 10 am direct from the US. We are an active couple in our mid 40s and really like historic sites, museums and not into partying. Here was an initial thought of the trip.
Arrive Athens and have a driver pick us up and drive to Napflion. Spend 3 nights there renting a car to tour the area. Day 3 drive the car to Athens airport and drop off the car and fly to Santorini spend 3 nights. Fly back to Athens and spend the last 3 nights. Thoughts?

You don't need a driver and should pick up your rental car at the Athens airport. It is an easy drive to Napflion.

The drive to Napflion is not difficult. You should not need a driver. There are some wonderful ancient sites to visit from Napflion. Try to go early before the tour crowd takes over. Do be aware that the Greek drivers are not the most careful. They tend not to stay on their side of the road even around curves.Theyspeed and pass on the right and at other dangerous places. I am not trying to discourage you. My husband and I have driven in Greece for several vacations and have had no mishaps. Drive defensively, and you should be OK. The rest of your trip seems planned well.

Thanks for the replies. The reason we wanted a driver was after flying all night I doubt either of us will want to risk driving. Glad the trip sounds doable. Thanks.

Have a couple of cups of GReek Coffee! THat should make you super-alert! :).

Two cups of Greek coffee will certainly wake you up! Then you will need something to take away the caffine jitters. ;-)

After an overnight flight, the last thing I would want is to rent an unfamiliar car and drive to a new destination. Another alternative is to spend your first day in Athens, then make your way to Nafplion.

Sorry, that should have read caffeine. I haven't had my morning cup of coffee yet. ;-)

You have a good plan, and if you don't mind springing for the driver I think it makes more sense to do 3-3-3 rather than a night in Athens before leaving for Napflion. There is also a train, but by the time you get into the city and get on the train, you could probably be halfway there with a driver.
